India, Great War and Southern Persia Miniature Military M.B.E. and Meritorious Service Medal Group of Eight, bar-mounted for wear

Miniature Group of Eight comprising: The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Member (M.B.E.), Military, 1st type, 1917-1935 issue; India General Service Medal 1908-1935, Edward VII issue, 1908-1910 with ‘N. W. Frontier 1908’ clasp; British War Medal 1914-1920; Inter-Allied Victory Medal, Great Britain and British Empire issue 1914-1919; General Service Medal, George V 1918-1930 issue with ‘S. Persia’ clasp; Delhi Durbar Medal 1911; Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, George V 1911-1920 issue; Army Meritorious Service Medal, George V 1916-1926 issue.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Member (M.B.E.), Military, 1st type, 1917-1935 issue, silver. Miniature silver cross patonce with Tudor crown suspension; the face with a circular central medallion with Britannia seated, her left arm extended, a radiant sun above right, within a ring inscribed ‘FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE’; the reverse with a circular central medallion with the crowned cipher of King and Emperor George V within a rope border; diameter 21.6mm (0.85 inch); on the post-1935 Military ribbon. The Order was instituted by King George V on 4 June 1917 in five grades to acknowledge the service of non-combatants during wartime. In 1918 the Order was divided into Civil and Military divisions. This example is of the first type with Britannia on the face; since 1935, the Order has had the head and shoulders portraits of King George V and Queen Mary facing left on the face.

India General Service Medal 1908-1935, Edward VII issue, 1908-1910 with ‘N. W. Frontier 1908’ clasp. Miniature circular silver medal with claw and ornate scroll swivel ribbon bar with original ‘N. W. FRONTIER 1908’ clasp; the face with the crowned head and shoulders portrait of King Edward VII facing left in Field Marshal’s uniform, circumscribed ‘EDWARDUS VII KAISAR-I-HIND’ (Edward VII Emperor of India); the reverse with a view of Jamrud Fort and the entrance to the Khyber Pass, inscribed ‘INDIA’ on a plaque below with oak and laurel branches to either side; diameter 17.86mm (0.7 inch). The medal was instituted on 1 January 1909 for service in campaigns on India’s borders. The ‘North West Frontier 1908’ clasp was awarded for service between 14 February and 31 May 1908 in actions against the Afridis, Zakka Khel and Mohmands.

British War Medal 1914-1920. Miniature circular silver medal with claw and ribbon bar suspension; the face with the head of King George V facing left, circumscribed ‘GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND : IMP:’ (George V King of Great Britain and Emperor of India); the reverse with St. George on horseback, reins in his left hand, a sword in his right, trampling a shield bearing an eagle with wings outstretched and a skull and crossbones, wavy lines denoting the sea beyond, a radiant rising sun upper right, dated ‘1914’ and ‘1918’ upper left and right respectively; diameter 17.63mm (0.69 inch). The medal was instituted in 1919 and awarded to members of the British and Imperial forces who had served between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Officers and men of the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines, and Dominion and Colonial naval forces were required to have completed 28 days mobilised service, though this was waived if active service had been terminated by death. The award criteria were subsequently extended to include post-war mine-clearing at sea and service in operations in Russia in 1919-20.

Inter-Allied Victory Medal, Great Britain and British Empire issue, 1914-1919. Miniature circular gilt bronze medal on laterally pierced loop suspension; the face with a winged figure of Victory; the reverse inscribed ‘THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919’ within a circular laurel wreath; diameter 17.87mm (0.7 inch). The idea of an inter-allied medal to commemorate victory in what was termed ‘The Great War for Civilisation’ is credited to the French Field-Marshal Foch. It was agreed that each of the Allies should issue a medal to their nationals featuring a figure representing ‘Victory’ on the front and have a symmetric double rainbow ribbon with red, the colour of courage and sacrifice at the centre, representing the colours of the allies flags and presenting an allegory of calm after storm. The British medal was instituted on 1 September 1919 to be awarded to all those who served in a theatre of operations between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. It was awarded also to all British Empire military, except those of South Africa, whose government issued their own variant. Additionally, it was awarded to those British servicemen active in the Hejaz and Aden after the end of the European war, for post-war mine clearance operations and for the Royal Navy mission to Russia, hence the latter date of 1919.

General Service Medal, George V 1918-1930 issue with ‘S. Persia’ clasp. Miniature circular medal with ornate scrolled ribbon suspension bar and ‘S. PERSIA’ clasp loose on the ribbon; the face with the uncrowned ‘coinage’ head of King George V facing left, circumscribed ‘GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:’ (George V King of Great Britain and Emperor of India); the reverse with a standing winged Victory with Greek helmet, an upright trident in her left hand, a laurel wreath in her right hand crowning an upright winged sword; diameter 17.81mm (0.7 inch). The medal was instituted on 19 January 1923 to be awarded to Army and Air Force personnel involved in small conflicts outside Africa and India where a separate campaign medal was not issued. The ‘S. Persia’ clasp was awarded for service in Southern Persia immediately after the end of the Great War between 12 November 1918 and 22 June 1919.

Delhi Durbar Medal 1911. Miniature circular silver medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the crowned head and shoulders portraits of King George V and Queen Mary in coronation robes in relief, facing left within a floreate wreath; the reverse with a central circular panel inscribed ‘Delhi 1911’ in Persian script, circumscribed ‘The Durbar of George V, Emperor of India, Master of the British Lands’ in Persian script; diameter 18.47mm (0.73 inch). The medal was awarded to some of the military present at the Delhi Durbar held in 1911 to mark the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary and also to others not present to recognise exemplary service.

Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, George V 1911-1920 issue. Miniature circular silver medal with swivel scroll suspension; the face with the crowned head and shoulders of King George VI in field marshal’s uniform facing left, circumscribed ‘GEORGIUS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:’ (George V King of Great Britain and Emperor of India); the reverse inscribed ‘FOR / LONG SERVICE / AND / GOOD CONDUCT’ above an arabesque; height overall 26.98mm (1.06 inches), diameter 17.79mm (0.7 inch); slight wear to silvering; on replaced correct post-1917 ribbon with some glue residue to the reverse. The medal was instituted in 1830 and has undergone various changes in design and award criteria since that date. At the time this example was awarded, the requirement was 18 years’ exemplary service.

Army Meritorious Service Medal, George V 1916-1926 issue. Miniature circular silver medal with swivel scroll suspension; the face with the head and shoulders of King George V in field marshal’s uniform facing left, circumscribed ‘GEORGIUS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:’ (George V King of Great Britain and Emperor of India); the reverse inscribed ‘FOR / MERITORIOUS / SERVICE’ above an arabesque, within a laurel wreath, a Tudor crown above ; diameter 17.64mm (0.69 inch). The medal was instituted on 19 December 1845 to reward distinguished and meritorious service by non-commissioned officers of the rank of sergeant and above. The George V version had a swivel suspension until 1926. The number issued has always been limited.

The Group is bar-mounted for wear; since the M.B.E. is on a post-1935 ribbon but the ribbons are of some age, they were probably remounted mid-20th Century. The composition of the Group suggests it was awarded to a senior British non-commissioned officer who served in India. A very good period miniature group.
