INTERMEZZO *** Before we invented the "art house" film was this a film for the "cultured" film goer? It is the classic love triangle: happily married man, with kids, falls passionately in love with younger woman,( and when the latter happens to be Ingrid Bergman why not?) What makes it arty is Lesley Howard is an international violinist and Bergman a student pianist who becomes his accompanist and "more". But art and ambition eventually drive them apart, exit stage left Bergman never to be seen again. Howard returns to the family home and all is resolved through a less-than-fatal accident suffered by his over-sweet daughter; this trauma allows Howard's to snuggle into the bosom of his family and the bosom of his dreary wife. What we want to know is what happened to Bergman: did she finish her studies did she become a great pianist, or just becomes a tart walking the streets of Boulevard St Germain? ....Or maybe she grows into a concert pianist and stars in Ingmar Bergman's "Autumn Sonata"???Read full review
