BOY WITH HIS DOG ANTIQUE WATERCOLOUR c1905 J. BARCLAY (HORACE HAMMOND fl 1903-1939) CHARMING PICTURE FOR SALE BY AUCTION LOW START

ARTIST:   Horace Hammond, as pseudonym J. Barclay (active 1903 – 1939), British, Birmingham School:  many examples on artprice.com, arcadia.com, askart.com, bonhams.com, christies.com   SUBJECT:   An interior, a figure sharing a meal with his best friend, his dog   MEDIUM:   Watercolour on paper   SIGNATURE:   Lower right, as J. Barclay   DATE:   c1905  SIZE:   Viewable painting within matt, 31 x 24cm (12.25 x 9.25 inches), frame 57 x 48cm (22.5 x 19 inches)   PROVENANCE:   Private collection    CONDITION:   Overall condition is excellent for its age, strong contrast throughout, colourfast and importantly, no foxing marks noticed; possibly, the work was cleaned in recent years, at which time it was reframed.  We inspected the work outside its frame. The artwork is laid to its original card, the residue of gum arabic to the edges where an old matt was placed in antiquity and which has, very slightly, encroached into the lower edge, beneath the new mount is unnoticed and has not affected the artwork at all, we mention for the sake of accuracy   FRAME:   Later to the work, a contemporary wood frame shows just light age-related wear.

SHIPPING:  weight is 2.25kgs and with extra packaging, 5kgs. Supplied complete to all UK addresses, with the option to exclude the frame to international destinations:   UK, economyparcels/courier, 3 -5 days UK10.00  European Union, courier, 2 - 5 days UK29.90 (WITH FRAME, glaze removed)  USA, Canada, Europe (non-EU), courier, 2 - 7 days UK29.90 (EXCLUDES FRAME)  USA, Canada, Europe (non-EU), courier, 2 - 7 days UK49.90 (WITH FRAME, glaze removed)  Australia, Japan, Asia, South America, Africa, courier UK36.50 (EXCLUDES FRAME)  Australia, Japan, Asia, South America, Africa, courier UK59.90 (WITH FRAME, glaze removed)

A super quality original watercolour, a charming interior scene with a figure sharing a meal in the stables with his best friend, his dog, signed lower right, J. Barclay.  J. Barclay was a pseudonym used by the Birmingham artist, Horace Hammond, active 1903 – 1939.  He also used the name A.D. Bell, for another gallery.   Working in watercolours, Hammond is well known for his figurative and landscape paintings of rural life, of which this is an exquisite example.  Horace Hammond, in all his names, exhibited 16 times at the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists, once at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and once at the Royal Academy, London.  Many examples of Hammond, Barclay and Bells work can be seen on artprice.com, findartinfo.com, artnet.com, arcadia.com and askart.com, besides the auction sites of bonhams.com and several rural galleries in and around the Midlands of England.  A super quality work from an experienced and collectible artist, in excellent condition presented in a later frame, this painting looks fabulous displayed.  FOR SALE BY AUCTION, LOW START
