Item specifics

Seller notes: The book is firmly and squarely bound, the boards are a little rubbed and bumped to the edges, also slightly grubby. The text block is slightly foxed, age toned and musty, but generally internally clean. The dust jacket is the original, it has some minor nicks, rubs and tears to the edges, also minor marking and some fading to the spine, but overall it presents very well.

Special Attributes:

1st Edition, Signed

J. R. R. Tolkien - Bilbo le Hobbit - 1969 first French edition.

Michael H. R. Tolkien's(J.R.R.'s son) copy, with his name, initials and the date that he acquired the book to the FEP & 1st blank page. There are also some fascinating notes from him to the rear, written in French, detailing the three occasions on which he read this particular book, with notes beneath each, detailing his pleasure at reading the story in French, but his increasing chagrin at his poor French vocabulary. A final note from 1975 tells us that at this point he acquired a paperback as a reading copy instead. Given the dates, it is highly likely that the book would have belonged to the great J. R. R. prior to being passed to his son, it is probably the complimentary copy from the publisher.

The book is firmly and squarely bound, the boards are a little rubbed and bumped to the edges, also slightly grubby. The text block is slightly foxed, age toned and musty, but generally internally clean.

The dust jacket is the original, it has some minor nicks, rubs and tears to the edges, also minor marking and some fading to the spine, but overall it presents very well.

The French 1st edition is very uncommon, but this is a particularly poignant association copy, and as such a unique and rather lovely addition to any collection.
