A book that has been read and does not look new, but is in excellent condition. No obvious damage to the book cover, with the dust jacket (if applicable) included for hard covers. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Some identifying marks on the inside cover, but this is minimal. Very little wear and tear. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections. See all condition definitions- opens in a new window or tab

J R R Tolkien: 'The Hobbit' First UK Edition 1937
A FIRST edition, FIRST impression, published by George Allen and Unwin in 1937.
Original green cloth, titles and Tolkien's own 'Mountains and Dragon' design to spine and both boards in
blue. Green top edge (not really evident). Map endpapers, front and rear. A first edition, first printing.
One of 1,500 copies of the First Impression of the First Edition published by George Allen and Unwin on
September 21, 1937. A very good copy of the book with a former owner’s neat name (see photo) to the
second free end-paper.
Some stains to the page block edges (which seep through to the interior of the book in places)
and quite a few handling marks to the interior. The book has a spine slant although the cloth itself is quite
clean. The book appears to have been read quite a few times. Now housed in a bespoke solander box of
green half morocco with gilt titles to spine, cloth boards, lined with black felt (see photo).
In a very good+ (or better) ORIGINAL (NOT A FACSIMILE) unclipped wrapper which is very bright and
clean and has benefitted from some neat professional restoration to the spine ends and corners and a
little to the extremities (performed by the UK's leading paper restorer and at a cost of £500 itself).
A lovely example of the dust wrapper indeed now and states 'second impression' to the front flap (please see photos).
A first edition, first printing book, in a second impression wrapper - please remember, this is the original wrapper and NOT a facsimile.
Please see the endless photos taken.
A sure fire investment opportunity, especially with the film coming up and the last instalment next year.
THIS IS FAR AND AWAY THE BEST BOOK TO COME ON TO EBAY FOR A LONG LONG TIME. Books without
original wrappers are going for upwards of £12,000 on abe. This copy has an original 1937 dust wrapper,
as well as the book.
