A large volume, bound in full leather with five raised bands, gilt title and design to spine. Measuring approx 31.5cm x 21cm x 4cm.
The binding is worn and scuffed. The front and rear boards are cracking to spine edges, and is begining to peel and chip in places. The spine has had some repair in the past, and has some chips and a few scattered worm holes. There is a hint of a twist to spine and the extremities are chipped and bumped. The top corners have had some repair and the bottom corners are chipped, with loss (see photos). Internally there are more recent endpapers to front and rear. Internally the boards are cracked to inner edges, and endpapers are split, and wrinkled/creased. There are a couple of repairs to fixed endpapers. Endpapers and blanks are grubby. There is a previous owners armorial bookplate to inside front board (Arthur Houlton). Two leaves have a corner chip. Pale scattered foxing and dusty/grubbiness throughout (little heavier to margins and in a couple of places). There are occasional small marks/stains and creases, else overall in very reasonable and tight condition for its 344 years.
Illustrated with several lovely woodcut illustrations within text.
One of the most highly influential texts on forestry ever published. It paved the way to a new approach to the management of forests, and for what we now call 'sustainability'.
