AN ORIGINAL 18th CENTURY ANTIQUE COPPER ENGRAVING BY

 MICHAEL VANDERGUCHT

(1660 - 1725),

AFTER A PORTRAIT, BY AN UNKNOWN ARTIST,

OF

JOHN HAMPDEN, PARLIAMENTARIAN

(KNOWN AS ‘THE PATRIOT’)

(1595 – 1643).

JOHN HAMPDEN, BORN IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, ENTERED THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN 1621.  HE EARNED THE DEEP RESPECT OF HIS FELLOW MPs FOR HIS RESOLUTE  DEFENCE OF PARLIAMENT’S RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES AGAINST THE CROWN.

HE GAINED LASTING NATIONAL FAME THROUGH HIS OPPOSITION TO THE ‘SHIP MONEY’ TAX AND AS ONE OF THE ‘FIVE MEMBERS’ WHO ESCAPED ARREST BY KING CHARLES I.

HAMPDEN FOUGHT BRAVELY FOR PARLIAMENT IN THE FIRST ENGLISH CIVIL WAR, BUT WAS MORTALLY WOUNDED AT THE BATTLE OF CHALGROVE FIELD IN 1643, DYING AT AN INN IN NEARBY THAME, OXFORDSHIRE.

This engraving was used in the 1740 edition of ‘History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England’ by Edward Hyde (1609 – 1674), who served King Charles I (1600 – 1649) as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.  Hyde was raised to the peerage as 1st Earl of Clarendon in 1661, following the Restoration of the Stuart monarchy in 1660.

The artist of the original painting used by Vandergucht is unknown.  The only information is this inscription below the lower right corner of the engraving:

“From a Painting in Mr Bulfinch’s Hands”.
