An exceptional item! Signed copies of this book with provenance are very rare to find. The client paid 2,200 pounds total, conversion rate in the past was higher, he paid $4200. That was ten years ago, these currently sell for $13,000 see listing for a signed Hobbit without a provenance http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=963309772&tab=1&searchurl=an%3DTolkien%26bi%3D0%26bx%3Doff%26ds%3D30%26recentlyadded%3Dall%26sortby%3D1%26sts%3Dt%26tn%3Dhobbit%26x%3D97%26y%3D7

This auction also includes two additional books: 1/ a book from the library of Tolkien purchased from Loome Booksellers. Loome is well known to have sold the library of Tolkien years ago. This book has a provenance bookplate. Minor age toning, not perfect but very nice. 2/ a book from the library of author Dorothy Sayers signed by her purchased from Sotheby's Auction. This book has a provenance bookplate. Sayers was a friend of CS Lewis and Tolkien and attended the Inklings meetings. Images of these books are available.
