Five volume set, various impressions, Macmillan, London, 1897/8.

 

 

Format

 

Contemporary ( or near ) half calf, gilt lettered and decorated, marbled paper boards. Top edges gilt.

 

 

Condition

 

Good, a tight and sound set.

Text blocks generally clean but with foxing / browning in places ( mainly to tissue guards on frontispiece plates ).

Bindings are rubbed and lightly stained.

The books are very sound apart from Northanger where the front inner joint has cracked - an easy repair.

Two joints have a short split starting - upper front joint Mansfield Park, lower rear joint Northanger - but they are unlikely to cause problems.

Corners bumped and rubbed.

A few leaves in two of the volumes are slightly 'sprung' but remain attached.

Text blocks of Sense and Northanger have a more noticeable spine lean than the other three volumes.

No inscriptions.

 

 

 

 Notes

 

An opportunity to acquire all five of the Austen titles in Macmillan's 'Illustrated Standard Novels' series. Possibly the most widely collected editions of Jane Austen. All are early or first printings from the series. They are in good, lightly worn, leather bindings. No binder's stamp or ticket but obviously one of the major firms.

Each volume has an introduction by Austin Dobson.
