A most beautiful and very rare book, this is the sought-after First Signed Limited Edition of East of the Sun and West of The Moon, by Kay Nielsen. Often said to be the most important work of the Golden Age period of book illustration. One of 500 copies only. A must have for the collector.
Book: EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON: OLD TALES FROM THE NORTH. ILLUSTRATED BY KAY NIELSEN. HODDER AND STOUGHTON, no date but 1914. First Signed Limited Edition - signed by Kay Nielsen. Later vellum with new silk ties, new slipcase. Pictorial end papers with designs after drawings by Kay Nielsen in black and gold. Top Edge Gilt ( TEG), other edges deckled or rough-cut. Superbly and profusely illustrated by Kay Nielsen with 25 beautiful plates tipped-in on blue-and-gold edged cardstock mounts, each under a captioned tissue guard. The text is printed on high quality thick paper. Extensively decorated and illustrated also with numerous black and white designs, drawings and vignettes - almost every page has a drawing or a decoration. Book condition: Externally a FINE, bright copy. Slight yellowing to vellum. Internally, occasional scatterings of small dusty spotting at top edge, a few small occasional spots near edges as is typical to books of this age with exposed uneven deckled edges, two pages with what appears to be a short closed tear about 1cm or perhaps a slight paper fault at lower edge ( close up photos below), slight rippling to tissues at upper edge, the tissues are otherwise flat and without wrinkles or creases, all of the superb lithograph plates are in perfect condition.
The above is stated for the sake of accuracy, overall a bright copy of a very famous and much-loved book, in very good condition .

CONDITIONS OF SALE: PAYMENT: Payment by Paypal, direct bank-to-bank transfers ( Chaps and BACS), Euro or UK check/money order to our UK address. Please note, Euro checks may take longer to clear in UK, up to 4 weeks, this is unfortunately a bank policy. Payment to be received within fourteen days unless otherwise agreed prior to auction end. Due to the costs of shipping to world destinations, the costs of the listings and Paypal fees, all sales are final unless an item has been grossly mis-described, for example, 5 teacups not 6, brass not gold, cotton not silk, print not original painting, major unstated damage and so forth. We do our best to accurately describe the age, origin, manfacturer and all attributes of each and every object, however this remains our informed opinion and subject of our reserach not a guarantee. We do however hope that our excellent record to-date will provide reassurance that we take care with descriptions and images. We provide the best photographs that we can and to describe the object in detail including any faults or defects could affect value or use. Please note however that many of our items are antiques and vintages 100+/200+ years old, sometimes older and hence there may be minor wear and tear and other age effects which are noted but not specifically menioned, as it is often impossible to describe or even notice every minor aspect of an old and used item. Please satisfy yourself as to the item prior to auction end. If you have any specific queries, feel free to email us. We are happy to answer any questions. We always pack well, insure and keep proof of shipping/tracking numbers, hence losses and breakages are exceptionally rare. We value your business. We have many happy customers, excellent feedback and we take pride in the quality of our many beautiful and exceptional antique items and works of art and our service. We hope you enjoy your purchase and look forward to seeing you again! Happy and peaceful reading and collecting!
