This is a rare little bike, perfect for a Bobber or Cafe Racer project.
Kawasaki make good looking bikes and this is no exception. This bike uses the J400 engine! The Z400-500 and GT550s are renowned for the reliability and bullet-proof engines.
This bike is a runner with 10 months tax and MOT but needs some work to get it up to scratch.
Main problem is the forks; they have major pitting in the main travel area and so leak oil past the seals. Included in the sale is a set of 36mm air assist forks from a GT550, the brake calliper mount is different but one could either fit a GT550 calliper (£25 on Ebay) or just swap out the good GT550 fork stanchions and keep the Z400 legs as they should fit being 36mm.
The engine runs okay, I can't find anything wrong with it, but there is some play in the cam chain tensioner so it is a little noisy but there are kits available from Ebay for £9.99. It has been retro fitted with electronic ignition so starts and runs more efficiently than the old contact breakers.
The carburettors could do with a clean and being set up correctly maybe even re-jetted to run richer, it has an after market Motad 4-1 exhaust fitted (baffles have been drilled out by PO) and so I think it's running lean after 6,000rpm. There is a great website I found dedicated to the Tei-Kei TK22 carburettors that would help with any re-build that you may want to do, just search Tei Kei TK 22 information in Google.
There is a front engine mount that has snapped! I don't think this should cause any problems as it is, but I have mentioned it. I have seen this on a number of Z500s GTs and GPZs and is a common problem easily sorted by welding a new mount on!
The seat cover is worn through and could do with re-covering.
Other than the things mentioned it's not a bad little bike, it is showing it's age in places the worst being small dent and scratches on the tank, and the odd flaking paint and chips here and there. Chrome is not too bad and seems to hold out longer on kawasakis.
Two keys and a V5 in my name. Sold as spares or repairs due to the forks leaking.
Haynes manual available for £5.00
I will happily allow test rides with proof of insurance and welcome any inspection after the sale; if anything is found not to be as described then there is no obligation to buy.
Viewing welcome and can be arranged at any time by email. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
The winning bidder must make contact within 24 hours of the sale ending to make arrangements for payment (preferably cash) and collection. If no contact is made within 24 hours I reserve the right to offer the bike to the next highest bidder or to re-list.
No “buy it now” price – I intend to let the auction run to its conclusion i.e. highest bidder wins!
Zero feedback bidders welcome... we all have to start somewhere! |
