A GREAT WAY TO LEARN WHAT IT TAKES TO BUILD A SOLAR PANEL WITHOUT A LARGE INVESTMENT IN TIME OR MONEY.

This kit is perfect for the curious about solar, a novice who wants to start building his/her own solar panels.
          This kit will keep you from making mistakes, it will keep you on the right track, If at any time you do not understand something you will have my e-mail address for free on-line help.
          I want you to have fun building this panel and give you the confidence to take on larger solar panel projects.

WHEN COMPLETE YOU WILL HAVE A 30+ WATT PANEL YOU CAN BE PROUD OF
                                           36 x.5v =18v
                                          18v x 2 AMPS =  36 WATTS  MAXIMUM

THESE CELLS ARE CUT FROM THE  6" X 6"  CELLS I HAVE FOR SALE THEY ARE RATED OVER 8 AMPS EACH.

CELLS ARE RATED WITHOUT ANY COVERINGS ON THEM FROM THE MANUFACTURER THEM ONCE YOU PUT A GLASS FRONT ON YOUR PANEL EXPECT A LITTLE LESS OUTPUT FROM THEM, AROUND 10 %, THAT IS WHY I SAY 30+ WITH A 36 MAX.

THIS KIT IS LIKE INTRO TO SOLAR 101                                                                    

LET ME TELL YOU WHAT YOU GET AND WHY:

*  45 3" X 3" RATED AT 2 AMPS EACH
          These cell are easy to work with they are 3" square cells. I put 45 cells in my DIY KIT so I know you will have 36 good ones when you are done.

25 feet of tabbing wire:
          tabbing wire is the flat skinny wire used professionally to connect cells together. You need 6" for each cell THIS GIVES YOU SEVERAL EXTRA FEET.

48" of bus wire:
          Bus wire is the wider thicker wire used as a common connection point for multiple connections.  WHERE MORE CURRENT IS FLOWING YOU NEED THICKER WIRE.

2 feet of 18 gauge black and red wire:
          you will attach these wires in the junction box.

one (1) blocking diode: 3 amp/600 watt
          A blocking diode is a semiconductor device used to stop the flow of current from one direction, but allow it in the opposite direction. In lay mans terms it is a one way street for electricity, You attach the diode to the (+) lead and when the panel is making electricity it will flow into your battery for example but when the sun went down or behind  a cloud the battery would try to flow backwards into the panel, this could cause two things to happen the battery you just charged would discharge or the electricity from the battery could damage the cells, the diode will not let the electricity flow backwards. You will be soldering the diode in the junction box provided.

50 spacers  used to keep the glass front and the plastic back from damaging the cells.

one ROSIN FLUX PEN   you swipe the pen tip where you will solder, it helps adhesion and solder flow.

one TUBE SOLDER in a dispenser pack, this is leaded solder  17 feet long coiled in a plastic dispenser. leaded solder has a lower melting temp. and I think it is easier to use the  the "NO LEAD" type.

ONE BASIC JUNCTION BOX:  this you will attach to the back of the panel and use it to connect wires . Both from inside and outside the panel.

THE INSTRUCTIONS  COME ON A CD,  THIS SAVES A LOT OF PAPER AND THE PICTURES LOOK GREAT.

 The CD contains 3 videos  and   35 PAGES OF DETAIL INSTRUCTIONS with 32 pictures.

WHAT THIS KIT DOES NOT CONTAIN THAT YOU WILL NEED  SOME BEFORE YOU START SOME WHEN YOU ARE NEAR THE END OF THE PROJECT:

           BEFORE YOU START         
          * You will need a soldering iron( 40 WATT IS WHAT I USE)  either the gun style or the stick kind.   I sell them in my store HEARTOFTHESUN-SOLAR
          YOUR SOLDERING IRON SHOULD HAVE A CHISEL SHAPE  TIP NOT A PENCIL TIP,  ON THE CD I SHOW YOU HOW TO MODIFY A PENCIL TIP TO 

          A CHISEL TIP.

          * A VOLT METER( MULTI-METER)  NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY BUT REAL HANDY I would recommend one.  

           NEAR THE END

          * A tube of silicone (clear) (home depot/hardware store)
          * A sheet of window glass use a piece 36" x 18" ( 46cm x 92 cm) Home Depot sells a pre-cut 36 x 18
          * A sheet of  plastic also 36” x 18”  1/4 inch thick ( .5 -.6 cm)
          * If you intend to charge a deep-cycle battery you will need a small charge controller, this will act like the diode and it will also give the battery the                         electricity the way the battery wants it( more about this at that web site I told you was full of info FREE) I also sell them in my store.

            * TWO  8’ x 1/2" ( 2.44 M  x  13mm) of aluminum c-channel ( home depot ) for your frame.

AFTER COMPLETING ONE OF MY KITS YOU SHOULD HAVE THE CONFIDENCE  AND KNOWLEDGE TO BUY ANY CELL ON THE MARKET, EVEN THE MORE EXPENSIVE MORE FRAGILE CELLS AND BUILD MUCH LARGER MORE POWERFUL PANELS.
