Fashionable Lady’s shawl
A beautiful shawl of a type similar to those used by ladies of quality in Regency England and in Paris of the First French Empire. It is of rectangular shape and measures 184cm x 67cm (without including the fringe on either end, which is another 10cm each end). It is ochre and red and has a decorative paisley pattern design.
To begin, shawls came from India, and were imported to Europe by Britain, however when Napoleon boycotted all British products and closed all European ports to British goods, the continental factories started making their own versions of the shawls to meet the demands of fashionable ladies who liked to have portraits painted of themselves with their treasured shawls as a status symbol.
