This Camshaft Kit is designed for all Rover V8's pre 1993 (non Serpentine type). For vehicles post 1993 (Serpentine) please view our other camshaft kits.
If you are using the 1995 and beyond engine (4.0 & 4.6), but fitting it into a different vehicle as a conversion or Kit/Custom project, and you need to use the Rover distributor with this later type engine, then you must choose one of the pre-1995 specification camshafts listed, and not the camshaft relative to the age or originality of the engine.
No problem... The simplest way to describe this is by the type of fan belt your engine has. All pre-serpentine engines had what is called v-belts fitted, they are called v-belts because if you were to cut through the belt (take a sectional view) you get a V. On the later Serpentine engines the belts were wider and flat.
It's been many years now since we approached 'Piper' with our original tentative request for a large and continuous supply of fast-road, high-torque & power efficient replacement V8 camshafts. Little did we know at the time just how many we would eventually end up needing.
It comes as no surprise now to me to see (15 years later) that the secret of Piper's success and worldwide renown is undoubtedly their unique ability to recognize what you need and then to draw on their vast experience of Camshaft profiling (and especially in our case, targeting & emphasizing cam profiling) to deliver ultimate efficiency for all Rover V8 street car power upgrades or rebuilds.
Spot on camshaft profiling for 4wd (Land Rover, Range Rover) or heavier saloon car applications with stock heads or beyond (Rover SD1, P5 & P6 perhaps). This camshaft is targeting low-end torque, mid-range power, falling short of Boy Racer level.
For stock 2wd Vehicles or If you have accomplished some further head reworking at least to Stage 1 and or beyond. We found that it achieved power increases of up to 22bhp, with surprisingly healthy increases in usable torque too, most noticeable under load and part throttle acceleration, as well as being continuous under harder driving through to as much as 5500rpm (assumed with engine correctly mapped and all other issues considered).
The power curve is shifted upwards by approx. 800rpm, achieving a possible 24-25bhp increase. With smaller capacity V8 (3.5) no torque loss at low rpm is noticed, but still provides a large increase of torque. Best used only with stage 1 or stage 3 heads as part of the upgrade along with ECU re-chipping etc.
None of our Piper camshafts offered here, should require any changing/upgrading of valve springs nor any other otherwise essential upgrades or machining at all. However it is always worthwhile considering the suitability of re-using any at all of your original engines parts that have association to the camshaft area
This and the following information/advice is also correct and appropriate for consideration even for std camshaft replacements.

RPi designed Piper Camshafts require no further engine or cylinder head modifications for installation. Although other upgrades can be recommended to further improve results for those more discerning.

Our further commitment, also is to help guide you through the minefield of not only the most common profiles available (listed above), but assurance corrective application for your type of engine. This includes all the later Rover V8 engines employing different style camshaft billets and other minimal but important issues. Below is a brief description of basic cam variants regarding basic design.

- Never re-use your original tappets, always use genuine new replacements.
- Timing chains are normally badly stretched and always need replacing.
- Push rods are cheap and should be replaced if at all worn.
- Rockers and rocker shafts should be checked for wear & signs of breakages to rocker pads, again only genuine is a suitable option for replacement.
- Shim Kits are available to check and set Tappet pre-load & are an essential consideration for all Camshaft replacements or work involving valves or rocker assemblies.
