Ignore the bull**** WhatHiFi review. It doesn't have a plodding bass at all. Bass Is punchy and tight but lacks a touch of depth. This Is In comparison to my old modified Onix OA21 and Cambridge Audios very own AM1 (Cambridge entry level budget amp). It's only a fraction though and I'm sure most people wouldn't even notice. Midrange Is nice and clear and high frequency detail may actually be a touch better than the Onix. It's obvious that Cambridge Audio spend a lot of time voicing their amplifiers because they are well balanced and always sound very musical (Unlike a lot of high end brands that I've heard). I tried to modify an AM1 once but gave up because I could only seem to make It sound worse... Buy with confidence!

A meaty, powerful-sounding amp, but not the most refined listen For: Excellent build, USB input, weighty, hefty sound, expressive midrange. Against: Bass sounds tubby.

This is an upgrade from my Cambridge Audio A5 that has served me well for around 15 years. I fancied a more powerful option & with an extra 15 watts per Chanel through my Monitor B2's it has made a big difference. It has been criticised for a muddy bass sound but I haven't noticed any of that through the Monitors' It's very tight & punchy even at higher volumes. I would seriously recommend this amp as an excellent high end budget beast.

Amps great but not a fan of built in dacs unless you got 1500 pound for the cambridge 851a , I'm running 650a with the cambridge dac magic plus connected sounds fantastic streaming hi res from my pc , better than the 651a with built in dac , but that's 700 pound of kit vs 400 , another good alternative is the yamaha AS 501 , 85 watts into 8 ohms , big heavy amp , built in dac , usb , friend got his with 6 yr warranty at richer sounds 250 pound all in bargin , photos of tannoy 615 , monitor audio 10 inch sub, cambridge audio 650a , 650c , 650t, dac magic plus , and mates yamaha As 501, plus picture of cleaning out the 650a , all in imaculate condition , it's connected up to my pc now , ripped my CD collection , best thing I ever did , my next amp will be the 851a or yamaha as1100
