Literary Essays

Daiches, David

About the book

This collection of essays reflects the author’s critical and scholarly interest in an unusually wide range of literary subjects, English, Scottish, American and general. There are studies of Shakespeare and of Samuel Richardson, of Walter Scott and of Christopher North, of Walt Whitman and of modern American criticism.

The collection also includes the lecture on ‘The writing of Scottish literary history’ which aroused such interest when first delivered before the Edinburgh Branch of the Saltire Society in 1954, and an original and provocative discussion of the problems involved in translating the Hebrew Bible into modern European languages.

Some of these essays originally appeared in periodicals in Britain and America; some were delivered as lectures on public occasions on either side of the Atlantic (that on Whitman was delivered at the Library of Congress, Washington, at the celebration of the centenary of the first publication of Whitman’s Leaves of Grass); several appear for the first time. all reflect a lively interest in literature as an illumination of the human situation, as well as an awareness of the purely technical side of literary expression.

The purpose of all these essays is interpretation and evaluation: those who know Mr Daiches’ earlier work will know how well equipped he is for both tasks. For those who meet his work for the first time in this book his depth of understanding and lucidity of expression will mark him as a master of the art and science of criticism.

Guilt and justice in Shakespeare; Samuel Richardson; The poetry of Dylan Thomas; Walt Whitman’s philosophy; Scott’s achievement as a novelist; Christopher North; The writing of Scottish literary history; A Cambridge dialogue; The ‘New Criticism’: some qualifications; The criticism of fiction: some second thoughts; Translating the Hebrew Bible; Religion, poetry and the ‘dilemma’ of the modern writer
