Care should always be taken not to replace existing fasteners with those of a lesser strength grade. Where fasteners are used on vehicles or any other vibration producing machinery suitable solutions must be found to prevent fasteners from shaking loose. There are many mechanical and chemical devices available to help prevent loosening. We stock a range of devices such as nylon insert nuts, shake proof washers and spring washers etc. however, as the designer, you must ensure the correct device or product is used for each individual situation.  

Stainless Steel

A2 Stainless Steel has excellent anti-corrosion properties under normal circumstances without coating. Primarily used for outdoor applications or in the food industries but also suitable for other indoor uses. For marine applications or where higher levels of salts, chemicals or acids are present, A4 Stainless is a better solution.

High Tensile (black or natural) 

These bolts are high quality and high strength used primarily in engineering applications. The higher the grade number i.e. 8, 10 or 12, the higher the tensile strength. Where installing nuts on such bolts, the strength grade of the nut should be at least equal to the grade of the bolt. Black high tensile bolts are in natural form with an oil coating to prevent corrosion during storage therefore, an additional protective coating needs to be applied for outdoor or anything less than dry environments.

High Tensile (Zinc)

High tensile zinc bolts are as per high tensile black with an additional zinc coating. Zinc coated bolts are commonly used outdoors.   Zinc coating offers a good level of protection against corrosion and whilst the zinc coating is tough and very well adhered to the steel, care should be taken not to damage the coating by using excessive force on installation or by using incorrectly sized tools etc. Corrosion may form local to any breach of the zinc coating caused by damage.      

Corrosion

Care should always be taken where mixing metals in direct contact as a corrosion cell can form between the metals usually resulting in the corrosion of the least noble of the materials. Stainless steel bolts for example, should only be fitted with stainless steel nuts and washers. Where steel alloy high tensile bolts are used in anything less than a dry environment, suitable anti-corrosion coatings may need to be applied.

 General information  

The photo's we use were taken by us and are of our actual stock however, because we have so many diameters and lengths of each item listed and because of the number of stock batches moving through our warehouse we use a near representation for each item as photographing each individual item and batch would be impractical or almost impossible. The apparent thread length may differ from shown in the photo however, thread length along with all other dimensional criteria are described in this listing. Head markings may vary from shown in the photo as markings vary from one batch to the next however; the material or strength grade is not affected. All fasteners are from quality assured manufacturers and are of a material or strength grade as specified whether marked or not.
