Masonic Memorabilia from New York is quite Scarce when compared to other locations. And the earliest ones are prized. Back in the 19th Century, Freemasonry was much more widespread in New York. Over time and especially during the Depression, things changed. The Sword Maker Howell was for numerous years headquartered within the walls of New York City’s landmark Masonic Temple and Grand Lodge Building on Broadway. This particular early building no longer exists. SWORDS BY HOWELL RATE AMONG THE VERY, VERY BEST! And They Are Rare. Considered Prized Treasures. Examples Are Becoming Scarcer and Scarcer By The Day.

Here we have a very, very early Knight Templars Commanding Officers Sword. A beautiful and unique piece, it also features a seldom seen portrait of a Gladiator on the very bottom of the scabbard. Utilizing a number of early techniques that at the time were deemed suitable for Templar Officers (Gilt-Brass, Silver, etc), the sword also features a military style blade. Such blades with a central blood grooves were completely abandoned for use on Masonic swords after the 1870's. Our current sword hails from circa the 1860's and is truly historic. Needless to say, it is a beautiful and highly collectible relic of American York Rite Freemasonry. Being a genuinely historic antique of over 150 years old, there is some normal expected age wear here and there. The blade has some oxidation, but it is not a serious issue. Ageing is natural for genuine antique items. There are no serious problems here. This is an excellent sword. The name of the original owner is etched on the blade. The Sword is stunning. The wood grip is handsome. There is a Silver Cross on each side. The ornate helmeted Knight Pommel is quite spectacular. A great Medieval design. Two Malta Crosses decorate the visor. There is much to be admired here. This Sword is a true rarity with a unique legacy and maker! The prestigeous name of “Howell”, legendary early Master Sword Maker appears on one side of the Blade. This Sword by Howell predates many of what we see from the great companies such as "The Ames Sword Company", “"M. C. Lilley & Co.", “The Pettibone Bros.” or “Horstmann of Philadelphia”. THIS IS A HIGH QUALITY HISTORIC SWORD. In the Scabbard, the Sword measures approximately 38 ½ inches. Alone, the Sword is around 36 ¾ inches with the Blade being about 30 substantial inches. Do not allow this beauty to escape you! We regularly feature extremely attractive and also very rare, top quality antiques including among the finest in Fraternal and Masonic Swords and Historic Relics as well as many other fascinating items.
