PIN-ON RIBBON BARS - D.I.Y.

MAKE YOUR OWN RIBBON BARS

USE THE MULTIPLE CHOICE BOX ABOVE TO SELECT THE COMPONENTS NEEDED. THE COMPONENTS MUST BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY AND ARE NOT INCLUDED IN EACH OTHERS PRICES!! (i.e. If you purchase a backing plate - the U-Channel is NOT included and vice-versa)
Read the information below first on how to do it!!

Here is a simple guide to manufacturing your own ribbon bars. If you want to see larger images, click on the link next to each photo. The larger image will appear in a NEW browser window and not disturb your viewing of this listing. Close the window after studying the image.

THIS IS A D.I.Y. PROJECT, NOT A HOME ASSEMBLY KIT!! The U-Channel sections will come to you 'rough-cut' and to a nominal size. You will need to cut and file to size according to your ribbon widths.

TOOLS YOU WILL NEED:
Small hammer, steel ruler, scissors, needle-nose pliers, hobby Mitre-Box and hacksaw (available on eBay), Double-sided tape (available on ebay), flat file.

COMPONENTS YOU WILL NEED:
U-Channel, Backing plates, medal ribbons.
NOTES
The U-Channel is rough cut and you will need to cut it to the sizes needed and file the ends smooth.
The Backing plates come in FIVE sizes - 1 1/4", 2 1/2", 3 3/4", 5" and 6 1/4". The sizes correspond to the standard UK Ribbon width of 32mm - 1 1/4". Non-standard UN, NATO etc will overhang the backing plate a little but will be attached to the U-Channel.

PREPARATION:
You will need 1 1/2" of each ribbon to go on the bar. Lay the ribbons on a flat surface butted together in the correct order of wear. Measure the width of the ribbons combined and then using the Mitre Box, cut your U-Channel to size LESS approx 1mm. Cover the outside face and the inside valley of the U-Channel in double-sided tape.

ASSEMBLE THE BAR - 1:
Remove the protective paper from the outside of the bar and offer up the first ribbon. Allow 1/2 a mm to overhang the bar. Ensure that the ribbon is exactly at right-angles to the bar so that the weave in the ribbon runs parallel with the edge. If you do not get the first one right, then all of your ribbons will be canted to one side!

ASSEMBLE THE BAR - 2:
Offer up the 2nd ribbon to the bar and butt it up firmly against the first ribbon but not so hard that the edges ride up into a ridge - just a firm, straight push. You should not see any brass through the seam. Attach any remaining ribbons to the bar in the same manner

ASSEMBLE THE BAR - 3:
Once you have attached all of the ribbons to the bar, turn it over and trim off the excess ribbon. There should be approx 1cm of ribbon showing on either side of the bar.

ASSEMBLE THE BAR - 4:
Remove the backing from the tape in the valley of the U-Channel and work along one side of the ribbon ends, curling them over the rim of the U and tucking them down inside the valley of the channel. Do the same for the other side of the row.

ASSEMBLE THE BAR - 4:
Remove the butterfly clutches from the backing plate pins and fit the backing plate into the valley of the U-Channel. Ensure that it is centred in the width of the bar. Hold it in place with finger and thumb and get your duster, hammer and needle nose pliers ready.

CLOSE THE BAR:
Grip the ribbon bar and backing plate at one end and squeeze them together. Put the ribbon bar onto your duster on a clean flat surface and cant it over at an angle. At the end of the bar only, gently tap down on the walls of the U-Channel. The brass is soft and will bend easily. Reverse your grip on the bar and do the other side. Now do the same at the other end. This is just to hold the backing bar in place while you complete the orperation. If you are working with a long bar, crimp the middle also to prevent the backing plate from bowing.

FINISH THE BAR:
Now comes the slightly tricky part. Holding the bar at one end, lay it down on your work surface and hod it at an angle (lean it away from you) Now with your hammer with short stroke light taps, work your way along the length of the bar bending the arm of the U-Channel over the edge of the backing plate to an even angle all the eay along its length. Turn it over and repeat the process. Your bar is done!!
F.A.Q's Q: Can I buy the channel cut exactly to size for my ribbons?
A: No. This is DIY project NOT a kit.

Q: Can I buy the U-Channel in LONGER lengths?
A: Yes, in 50cm lengths, but only a minimum of 10 pieces per purchase (Message me and I will list for you)

Q: If I mess up and put the ribbons on in the wrong order can I open it up and move them around?
A: No. But you can save the backing plate to use again. The U-Channel is not re-usable.

Q: Can I buy the backing plates in any other sizes?
A: Not currently but we are sourcing a supplier who will make them also in odd sizes
