BIOGRAPHY

MELVILLE, JOHN (British, 1902-1986)

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION   click for works    back to artist list

John Melville was born in London but moved to Birmingham in his youth. He attended classes at the Birmingham College of Art but in effect was self-taught, and begun to paint full time towards the 1920s, spending most of his time in the Cotswolds until the early 1930s.

His early paintings show a strong Cubist influence. In the early 1930s, he became a convert to Surrealism, and remained more or less faithful to surrealist ideas for the rest of his life. A member of the Birmingham Group in the 1930’s, he joined the Surrealist Group in 1938. Shortly afterwards, just before the onset of World War II, Melville published a series of pieces in the Surrealist publication London Bulletin, but a clear move towards painted portraits and still life was evident during the war.

His first one-man show was held in 1932 at the Crescent Theatre, Birmingham; followed by an exhibition at the Wertheim Gallery, London - one of the most progressive avant-garde galleries around at the time.

He participated at the Surrealist exhibition at the Zwemmer Gallery, London - landmark in history of British Surrealism.

The Post War years brought about a change in his work, he turned more to conventional modernism. In the 1960s he reverted to Surrealism again adding a strong element of expressionism. He was working almost in total isolation towards the end of his life.

MEDIUM
WATERCOLOUR ON PAPER with touches of black ink and gouache.

DATE

1949

Signed and dated 49

PROVENANCE

Part of the late Colin Madden's collection

SIZE:

Image size 20 x 25.5 inches,  Unframed

DESCRIPTION;

This is an original watercolour painting with traces of black ink and gouache on paper. It is unframed and was bought  along with other mixed works  from a collector's  collection, who bought most of Melville's studio works when Melville died in the late 80s. The technique is bold black ink and watercolour highlighted with gouache, quite thick and bold  in places. Very effective technique, and nice colours. Melville did paint quite a lot of Surreal mountainous landscapes mixed in with industrial scenes and inuendos , but also some portraits and some figurative subjects as well, as is the nature of the surrealist artists.

There is an inscription verso that says 2 N0 1 'Scottish Mountains' September 1962...GNS 150----.    The painting is signed bottom right in very dark ink or watercolour and difficult to see and also dated 49". so I would imagine this to be a gallery Title and price on the back.

I still have quite a few works from this collection, one of the few British surrealists to be recognised by the art world. This work is signed  John  Melville  bottom right and dated 49' and is in excellent condition, one of his more substantial works and I think one of  his better examples.

These works have been in my folio cabinet since the early 1990s and I am offering  a few of them again on e-bay at the moment, there are a few portraits, some abstract/surreal landscapes, plus a few marine subjects and some figurative works to follow.

Once mounted and  framed in a Modern British style this work  would be a super addition to any art  collection, a fine work of art by this well documented British surrealist artist.

The Condition is excellent.  there are some small tears and a minor loss along the top edged ,this has taping to the back to stop further damage , this is un-noticeable from the front and will be covered when mounted and framed.

It is  offered well below what his paintings  fetch at auction now, and will look superb once framed and hanging on the wall .

A highly recommended and collectable, piece of art, of  really good quality.
