GEORGIAN & VICTORIAN COSTUME - MENS LACE CUFFS

Mens lace cuffs. Gathered white lace elasticated at the wrist for a  comfortable fit. The cuffs can be worn with a jacket, shirt & waistcoat in an authentic Georgian/Victorian way.

The design of lace may vary due to availabilty, but it will  always be white and always good quality.

This is the perfect accessory for 17th-18th century costume and also for Victorian costume. Also see our other listing for matching gathered lace jabot/cravat.

This particular costume  accessory is suitable for a variety of periods including Victorian, American Civil War & Regency and has a wide range of uses. It is perfect for museum visits and school trips to such places as Kentwell Hall, Chatsworth House, Tatton Park, Dunham Massey, Croxteth  Hall and ,Ruthin Castle to name but a few of the places of interest that stage historical events. This costume would also be perfect for Victorian events such as  Victorian tea/garden parties, Victorian Markets, Victorian picnics by the river, Dickensian Christmas events, murder mystery evenings, themed weddings and fancy dress parties, Victorian re-enactments.

It is also perfect for  pantomimes, TV and theatrical productions based on the eras in question. This  costume would be suitable for most Charles Dickens characters from Oliver Twist,  Nicholas Nickleby, A Christmas Carol, Pickwick Papers & Great Expectations for  example. Characters from the Bronte books, such as Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. Characters from Pride & Prejudice such as Elizabeth Bennett & Mr Darcy and would be suitable for most characters from Cranford.

The  cuffs could also be used as part of an Austin Powers costume and probably for  lots of characters that we haven't thought of.

Our costumes have been purchased by museums, schools, TV companies & theatrical groups from here in the UK & across Europe, to as far away as Tasmania & the USA.

If you are looking for a quality costume that will stand out from the crowd, then look no further. VERY VICTORIAN

The Victorian era spanned  the reign of Queen Victorian, from 1837-1901 & it was a  period of great  industrial growth &  prosperity.

Things were changing rapidly, it was a time of political & social reform. The  upper classes who were once mainly established aristocracy, were growing in  number as the new wealthy commercial class emerged & whilst  the middle classes were steadily growing there were still large numbers of  working class and for them life was hard and child labour was the norm.

It was an exciting  period of scientific & technical progress, also a period of great advances in  medicine. In 1851 huge numbers of Victorians flocked to the Great Exhibition at  Crystal   Palace in London, eager to marvel at the new inventions of  the age. Novels and poetry were popular and the authors of the day are as well  known today as they were then, The Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens, Lewis  Carroll and Rudyard Kipling to name but a few.

For the well to do  there was leisure time in abundance, picnics by the river, afternoon tea with  friends, opera, theatre and more food than was necessary. At the other end of  the scale the poor lived in squalor, wearing hand me down clothes and living off  a meagre  and limited diet. The poor worked long hours and had little spare  money to do anything with what bit of  spare time they did have.  Life  was hard for the poor and once they'd outlived there usefulness, most were  packed off to the workhouse to live out the rest of their days

.Fashion styles changed  several times throughout Queen Victorias reign, the longest reign of any English  monarch to date and it is one of the most popular eras for costume. From  crinolines to bustles, leg of mutton sleeves and petticoats and corsets that  almost squeezed the breath out of the wearer.

The Victorian era paved  the way for the way way we live in the modern world today, I wonder what Queen  Victoria would think of life today. Would she approve or would she say " we are  not amused"
