Mountain bikes represent an important part of the cycle industry and there are currently over 40,000 mountain bikers in Britain alone. The mountain bike, or ATB (All-Terrain Bicycle) has flat tyres, flat handlebars and 18 gears. It is easy and comfortable to ride and is designed to be ideal for off-road riding as well as in the city. The authors aim to give readers all they need to know about mountain bikes and how to get the most out of this activity - how to choose a suitable bike, how to ride like the experts and how to look after the bike. The final section explores the possiblities of expeditions further afield and includes many tales form the authors' own exploits on mountain bikes in the Himalayas. There is also a list of appendices which include lists of manufacturers and details of clubs and other publications. Max Glaskin is a former cycling journalist and now edits the newsletter of the Mountain Bike Club. Jeremy Torr is the secretary and founder member of the Mountain Bike Club.
