WHEN THEY ARE AT THE SIDES YOU JUST DONT NOTICE THEM ESPECIALLY WITH THE INTERLINING

 INTERLINING

INTERLINING IS A FABRIC PLACED BETWEEN THE LINING AND THE MAIN FABRIC

THIS GIVES THE BLIND A QUALITY FEEL SO WHEN UP IT WILL FOLD IN NICE ROUNDED FOLDS IS THICKER AND MORE SUBSTANTIAL IT HELPS TO STOP THE CREASING OF THE FABRIC WHEN DOWN AND ALSO INSULATES THE WINDOW AND HELPS BLOCK OUT LIGHT AND GIVES A MORE DEFINED LOOK TO THE FABRIC AS RODS AND SEAMS CANNOT BEEN SEEN THROUGH AS WITH PLAIN LINING

DECIDING WHERE TO FIX YOUR ROMAN BLIND

A few points to consider, things a lot of blind makers won’t point out to you

If fixing on a window frame and your handles or any part of the window protrudes in front of the frame, when pulling your blind up it will catch on the handles or anything sticking out this can pull the rings or cording of or even rip your fabric if the blind is pulled up with force

So unless your window is totally flat to the frame you are fixing on, don’t fix it to the frame

When a roman blinds pull up the folds fold up behind the blind so if fitting in a recess they are best top fixed with a clearance of about 7-8cm from of any handles to ensure smooth running

This will often mean you can’t put items on the sills when the blind is down

If fixing to a sash window flat on the wall please be very careful when pulling blind up and down that it doesn’t catch on the little window rising hooks just lift the blind forward slightly when pulling up

And be careful with your blind it will last you for many years

WHICH TRACK TO HAVE

The for and against of traditional covered baton and cleat and deluxe sidewinder tracks

Both the baton and the deluxe sidewinder will hold any weight of blind as long as the track is securely fixed and with the baton you must also securely fix the cleat

If fixing outside a recess or on a sash window the blind will go over the top of the baton on a baton track totaly covering the top of the baton

If using a sidewinder outside a recess or on a sash window it fixes on the front so if the blind is in situ where you can see the top i.e. coming down stairs over a balcony or a low window with a sidewinder track you can see the top of the track, it’s not so neat as on a baton where you see the blind fabric across the top when looking down

When face fixed outside a recess or on a frame and the blind is down the sidewinder tracks hold the blind about 4.5cm away from the wall or window frame, so when the blind is down it’s not as flush to the wall or frame as it will be on a baton. The batons hold the blind about 2cm away as they are narrower than the tracks

The sidewinder tracks have the benefit of being very easy just to wind up and down on the rotary winder

With the baton you pull up by the cord and wrap the cords around the cleat

So it’s really a matter of personal choice they both have advantages and disadvantages

There are other sidewinder tracks on the market, we have been making blinds for many years and only use the baton or deluxe sidewinders as these are the only 2 methods that we feel are worth using

There are external cassette sidewinders these have the winding cassettes that are big and bulky and can be seen from outside the window and we think what your blind looks like from outside is important

With the deluxe sidewinders the cassettes are all hidden inside the track and not visible from outside

With the baton this is also neat and tidy from the outside

Also with the external cassette tracks that we don’t use, they inhibit how high you can pull up the blind cutting out far too much light in recesses

A lot of blindmakers use self locking cleats or tracks that are self locking these are ok for a while and may stand the test of time on lightweight or unlined blinds but if used on quality interlined heavier fabric or wider blinds will eventually not stand the test of time. I don’t care what anyone else says we personally won’t waste your money on them, as soon as we find a decent long lasting one on the market we can assure you we will start using them

MADE READY TO FIT ON CUSTOMERS OWN TRACK

This will be a blind with a 2cm wide velcro headed top, the drop you purchase must include this top

It will be made with the rings on the back  and supplied with the cord for you to string up onto an existing track or baton you have or have purchased elsewhere

You will be asked after purchasing how many rows of rings you require across the blind for your track or baton

SUPPLIED ON A FABRIC COVERED BATON READY TO FIT

This will be supplied strung up and balanced on a covered baton velcro headed and supplied with a cleat to fasten the blind

If fitting inside a recess the baton will be covered in a lining the blind will fix onto the front of the baton

If fitting outside a recess the baton will be covered in the same fabric as the blind and the top of the blind will fold over and fix onto the top of the baton this looks much neater when outside a recess as it covers the top of the baton

This will be supplied strung up and balanced on a deluxe sidewinder track

FOR THE WIDTH MEASURE ACROSS THE WINDOW AT THE TOP THE MIDDLE AND THE BOTTOM TAKE THE NARROWEST WIDTH AND DEDUCT 1CM OVERALL FOR MOVEMENT THIS IS YOUR FINISHED BLIND WIDTH

IF YOU HAVE ANY OBSTRUCTIONS IN THE RECESS I.E. TILES, ARCHITRAVING, PIPES, YOU MUST TAKE THESE INTO ACCOUNT AND MEASURE THE WIDTH WHERE THERE ARE ANY RESTRICTIONS

FOR THE DROP MEASURE EACH SIDE AND IN THE CENTER THE FINISHED DROP IS THE SHORTEST OF THESE 3 YOU DO NOT NEED TO DEDUCT ANYTHING

INFORMATION AND HOW TO MEASURE OUTSIDE A RECESS

IN FACT WHEN UP THEY ARE PULLED THEY LOOK LIKE A PELMET AND FRAME THE OUTSIDE OF THE WINDOW

YOU CAN ACTUALLY HANG THEM AS HIGH ABOVE A WINDOW AS YOU LIKE THIS MEANS THEY DONT HAVE TO CUT OUT ANY LIGHT AND YOU CAN HAVE SOME OF THE BLIND HANGING DOWN TO SEE THE LOVELY FABRIC

PLUS THEY DONT INTERFERE WITH ANYTHING YOU MIGHT WANT TO PUT ON YOUR WINDOW SILL OR GET CAUGHT ON WIDOW LATCHES

IT’S THE BEST PLACE TO HANG THEM IF YOUR WINDOW IS NOT SQUARE

IF OUTSIDE A WINDOW RECESS JUST MEASURE 2-3" PAST EACH SIDE OF THE RECESS FOR WIDTH OR WIDER IF YOU LIKE

AND HOWEVER MUCH YOU WANT ABOVE AND BELOW

BLINDS ON SASH WINDOWS LOOK BEST IF COVERING ALL OF THE WOOD FRAME WHEN THE BLIND IS DOWN

IF THE TOP OF THE SASH WINDOW IS NOT 100% STRAIGHT YOU CAN STILL FIX THE BLIND ONTO THE WOOD FRAME AS LONG AS YOU ENSURE THAT THE BLIND IS FITTED LEVEL YOU WILL NOT SEE BEHIND IT THAT THE TOP OF THE WINDOW IS NOT LEVEL

FOR THE WIDTH MEASURE ACROSS THE WINDOW AND ALL OF THE FRAME AT THE TOP THE MIDDLE AND THE BOTTOM TAKE THE WIDEST WIDTH AND ADD 4CM OVERALL, THIS IS YOUR FINISHED BLIND WIDTH

BAYS ARE VERY VERY VERY RARELY STRAIGHT SQ OR LEVEL SO IF YOU ARE MEASURING FOR A BAY PLEASE SEND UP PICTURES OF THE BAY FROM A DISTANCE AND CLOSE UPS OF THE TOPS THE ANGLES AND THE SILLS AND WE WILL SEND YOU DETAILED INFORMATION FOR MEASURING

BAY WINDOWS LOOK MUCH NICER IF THE BLINDS MEET DOWN THE CORNER AND DONT OVERLAP

THE BLINDS WILL ALWAYS BE PATTERN MATCHED ALONG THE TOP

THEY WILL ALWAYS BE INDIVIDUALLY CENTRALISED ON THE PATTERN WHICH MEANS THAT EACH BLIND WILL NOT PATTERN MATCH UP THE SIDES TO THE BLIND EITHER SIDE OF IT THIS IS NORMAL FOR BAY WINDOWS

3 IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK ANY SELLER YOU ARE THINKING OF BUYING A BLIND FROM

ARE THERE ROWS OF STITCHING VISIBLE ON THE FACE CLOTH OF THE BLIND

As in cheap mass produced blinds, as this ruins the look of the fabric with rows of ugly stitching running across the fabric This includes the bottom pocket and the velcro top which must be hand sewn on the reverse to have NO stitching across the hem or the top of the blind The only stitching that should be visible on a quality handmade roman is tiny stab stitching along the rods  to make the blind fold up and to sew the rings onto the back of the blind which if you look at my pictures you will see is barely visible, the stab stitching is always done in the same colour cotton as the part of the face fabric it is stitched to

WHAT IS THE WINDOW AREA COVERED BY THE BLIND WHEN PULLED UP TO ITS SMALLEST INCLUDING THE TRACK OR BATON DEPTH

As a quality blind will have a drop of between 15 & 25 cm depending on the drop and thickness of the fabric when pulled up so as not to cut out all the light which is an important factor As a lot of cheaper blinds will have large gaps between the rods this will result in the blind hanging down over the window and covering up to 45cm of your window cutting out very important light

ARE THE RODS HAND SEWN INSIDE THE BLIND

NOT IN LINING POCKETS

As the look of the back of your roman blind is as important as the front And cheaper machine made blinds will have either horrible rows of tape across the back Or the lining with rows of machine stitched pockets across, I don’t call these blinds quality as this is a mass produced option Which all add bulk to the roman blind making it look untidy from outside the house With the rods sewn inside the blind & looking from the outside all you see is a flat lining as in curtains With just the rings and white cord to operate the blind

Small 1" sq colour samples of all my fabrics are available

Up to 10 samples will be sent out free you must tell us the fabric code on the listing

It is no good just saying all spots stripe plains reds blues etc. or anything similar, or like this one,  as we keep all our samples in number code order, and as we send out hundreds of samples a week FREE we do not have the time to search for a fabric for you, this you have to do, all the fabric listings have codes on them

So just send us the list, you must send your address and the list of sample codes, to our customer services email address at the base of this listing, as samples are dealt with by our customer services

If you send a request for samples directly through the ebay message system the samples will eventually be sent when we are not busy in the workroom, or have time to send the request onto our customer services, but if you send the request via the customer services they will be sent out the same day
