The first movement is wildly oscillating, extremes of peace, anxiety, despair. The second movement has a cheerful quality to it, rustic, carefree. The third is harsh, yet somehow relieving. In the 3rd, there is a transition to a more peaceful, sad feeling (Some people might see Mahler as sentimental, but who cares?). The fourth movement is restful and at times piercing in its pain. Yet there is undoubtedly a depth to the ending, which, if you can perceive it, is indescribable.

Fabulous symphony! I particularly wanted a recording of this symphony conducted by Simon Rattle, and found this with Berlin Symphony Orchestra. It is just what I was looking for and a very good price in very good condition.
