Fantastic product, typical Makita, the drill is a little weighty probably due to the size of the 3 speed gearbox, for an every day 18v drill I also have the 2 speed version which is considerably lighter and I find myself going for that one first, but, for those tasks that require you to pull out the big guns this's drill really packs a punch, on the slowest speed I've wound in 10" coach screws without first making a pilot hole, it does exactly what it says on the tin. Hope this helps.
My first purchase of a non budget battery drill. Nice solid workaday feel and comfortable to hold. As expected provides high torque when its needed. The batteries charge quickly from a lightweight transformerless charging station and hold there charge when not in use. For me the feature which most distinguishes this from cheaper drills is the quality of the key-less chuck (up to now I've always preferred keyed chucks). The chuck firmly tightens up with a reassuring ratcheting sound and yet releases easily without a huge deal of effort. The carry case is cavernous - rather unwieldy perhaps for some(don't use mine) but I'd say, probably useful if lots of accessories are needed along with the drill.
This drill is a reasonable amount heavier than Hitachi and Bosch 18 volt drills. But for good reason, it is very well made and has a lot more metal in it. It seems to be well balanced and virtually un-stoppable in use. If you have some big holes or large fixings to go into materials, this is the one. It just keeps ploughing on, with bags of torque. Yes it is a bit expensive, but a I think it is cracking valve for such quality
I purchased Makita for the simple reason that they are just such good tools. I work as a professional and use these every day and Makita is a reliable make that I can count on to do the job. The build quality is superb with lots of features for a variety of jobs. Does what it says on the Box :)
I bought this a replacement for the body of my 3 year old drill. The top speed gear on the original had packed up, and with a new gearbox costing £75 it was the best solution to enable me to use the very expensive batteries. I've used Makita gear for 25 years, all their products are generally very reliable, so I was very disappointed when the original body gave up after 3 years of not very hard use, I just hope it was a 1 off and this will be better. These are very expensive drills, to warrant their cost they really need to work in a harsh trade environment for 5 years so at the moment the jury is out
