ABOUT THE WORK
An original painting by internationally acclaimed British abstract and figurative artist Barry Hudson.
One of a number of semi abstract figure paintings simplifying the graphical shapes and forms of the male nude, this work features the first pose in the studio by amateur model Gary. Inspired by the natural anatomical structure of the model's physique and the dramatic juxtaposition of colour opposites within the simplified design, Barry Hudson has created a highly textured and fresh interpretation of the academic nude figure. The painting is signed and titled by Barry Hudson front and verso and has not been reproduced as limited edition or open edition prints.
This painting is offered direct from the artist with considerable savings for the winning bidder. Typical commercial gallery prices for a Barry Hudson painting like this are around £275

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in West Yorkshire, Barry Hudson studied at Leeds College of Art and embarked on a long career in commercial art. Now retired and enjoying a second home in Cornwall, he works from his Huddersfield-based studio producing both abstract and figurative paintings and exhibiting regularly in St Ives and throughout the UK.
Elements in some of his abstract work are notable insofar as they are conceived from his personal experience as a lifelong migraine sufferer. They are inspired by the rich tapestry of colours and textures that are 'seen' behind closed eyes during the visual disturbances that are symptomatic of the illness. Says Hudson "What is traumatic can be seen as attractive. Although I do not attempt to re-create any specific visual sensation, I try to transform what is perceived as negative into a positive and stimulating experience"
Conversely, Hudson's representational works owe much to the Impressionists. The paintings are nevertheless individual and distance themselves from the traditional genre by the use of bold areas of subtle colour and shapes that are contrived to flatten the picture plane. Comments Hudson "I am not in the business of repeating the detailed properties of photography. I accentuate colours and occasionally use heavy impasto with distinctive graphical shapes to describe an accessible and recogniseble whole".
His work is in the collections of The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Lord and Lady Aldenham, Lord Melvyn Bragg and many other artistic luminaries. Respected by dealers on both sides of the Atlantic as an artist with serious investment potential, a number of his paintings have been reproduced as exclusive limited edition prints and originals can be seen in commercial and private galleries internationally.
