Here for sale is my first proper amp. It is a Marshall Valvestate VS230 - 2 channel amplifier with a great and versatile sound. It also comes with the original foot switch for channel selection and chorus on/off.
The 230 bit means it has two 30 watt amplifiers driving the two speakers. This is how it achieves the stereo chorus.
I really don't want to see this one go, so many memories...
I've always really liked this amp. It has a sound to it that the valve amps I have owned just don't seem to do. The clean channel is excellent. It has a quality to the top end that shimmers and sparkles brightly but it doesn't sound harsh and ice pick like as I find is often the case with tube amps. It just seems to effortlessly produce an extra "octave of gloss". I can remember how disappointed I was when I got my first valve amp and it was not capable of reproducing that sound.
Also when turned up to the max as is obligatory with any Marshall amp it actually breaks up very nicely. Channel one is simple: volume, bass and treble.
Channel two is a very versatile drive channel with a lot of control over overdrive/distortion character. It has that Marshall sound and can rock out pretty hard. It has a gain control then bass control and then it goes to a contour control which I think is like a sweepable mid scoop. This contour control can adjust the tone quite dramatically and is capable of producing classic full range to more mid scooped modern sounds. Then there are treble and volume controls after that which are self explanatory.
The amp has a great reverb and chorus section too. In fact, the chorus on this thing is quite excellent!
This amp is from before the era of amp modelling and in my opinion sounds much better for the lack of it.
This amp has been gigged and moved around a bit in its life and there are some small bits of damage to the black tolex. I have tried to photograph the worst of these. Also there are scuff marks on some of the knobs and a few scratches here and there. Given its age the condition is pretty good in my opinion.
In the cab are two celestion gold back speakers.
When cleaning it up I did notice a few hairline cracks in the ceramic magnets on the speakers at the back. I don't know how long they have been there but it doesn't affect the sound or useability as far as I can tell. Maybe this is why it sounds so good? Who knows. Also I fitted a new high quality Neutrik jack to the foot pedal lead and replaced one of the foot switches with a higher quality component as it was unreliable.
Anyway, for the sake of honesty, good conscience and completeness I thought I should mention that.
I think that pretty much covers it.
I really don't want to ship this amp as it is too risky and frankly difficult.
Collection from Wood Green in London only.
If you are willing to take the risk and pay a fortune in packing and shipping then we may be able to discuss that.
I have described this amp as accurately as possible and to the best of my knowledge all details are correct. I can not accept returns on this as I will be travelling abroad. Just so you know.
Sold as seen.
I was looking some specs to post here but couldn't find any. However there are a lot of great reviews!
