This is a rare chance to purchase a complete tuneable turbo kit for a Mk1 Mazda MX5 (1.6) / Eunos Roadster. This kit is sufficient to boost your engine's output to over 200bhp turning the MX5 into a monster.

I spent about 5 years building this kit up and tuning it on my MX5 but I've now broken the car for spares and I'm selling this as a complete bolt on kit.

Turbo
The kit is based on the popular GReddy turbo kit for the 1.6, however most of the standard kit parts have been upgraded, all that remains of the original kit is the turbo and the manifold. I also added an intercooler (Saab) which is not included in the original kit. Included with the turbo is:

  • Mitsubishi TD04 turbo charger (I ran this at 11psi). Minimal play in the compressor and all blades in good condition (see photo). Always ran on fully synthetic engine oil and allowed to cool down via a turbo timer.
  • Oil inlet line to connect to factory oil outlet on NA6CE engine block
  • GReddy exhaust manifold - this was supplied new with relief cuts and has no cracks.
  • Upgraded custom made 'Turbo Tony' downpipe - provides hugely better flow than the standard GReddy item and cost a fortune to import from the States. (Search the MiataTurbo forum for more on this downpipe).
  • Saab intercooler
  • Custom intercooler pipework (some in stainless steel, some painted mild steel)
  • Silicone hoses to connect intercooler pipework
  • Bailey dump valve
  • HKS mushroom air filter
  • GM air temperature sensor
The kit also allows you to remove your airflow meter and have an air filter connected directly to the turbo.

ECU
Also included is a ready built Megasquirt 1 ECU which is a replacement ECU for your car; you unplug your standard ECU and plug this in, then connect your laptop and you have everything you need to tune every aspect of your engine. The ECU includes a plug and play connector for your standard MX5 wiring harness, all you need to do is splice into one wire for the fuel pump (I've labelled this to make it clear).

I purchased this ECU as a kit from DIYAutotune in the US and built it up myself - see the photo of the interior of the ECU to see the quality of the build. It has ran flawlessly for me for the past few years and transforms the car, unlocking the potential of the turbo. The ECU is running the MSnSE ('Megasquirt n spark extra') firmware which allows you to control both the fuelling and the ignition timing. Timing is where you gain the power so this is important!

Megasquirt is an incredibly flexible ECU with a thriving DIY community. As a base it lets you do the basics of engine management, but is flexible enough to be extended to do things such as water injection and launch control if you desire.

You will need a copy of the TunerStudio software (http://tunerstudio.com/index.php/tuner-studio) but I will supply a copy of the map loaded onto the ECU on a DVD. Please note - this map should be viewed as an example only! You will need to tune it for your car and I accept no responsibility for you blowing your engine up if you don't!

Wideband
To monitor the performance of the engine an Innovate Motorsports LC-1 wideband controller (inc Bosch sensor) and DB guage are included - this integrates with the Megasquirt ECU to monitor your fuelling and the DB guage gives you a readout of the lamba on the dashboard. This unit alone cost over £250.


Fuelling
Included are 4x RX7 460cc fuel injectors and a modified MX5 wiring harness to allow the RX7 fuel injectors to plug straight into the MX5. I purchased the fuel injectors from a forum member in the States and whilst I never had a problem with them you should probably budget to have them cleaned just as a matter of good practice. You will also need new o rings (<£10) as the old ones were hard when I removed the injectors.

  • RX7 -> MX5 fuel injection wiring harness

  • Megasquirt -> MX5 wiring harness with Boomslang ECU connector
  • Innovate Motorsport LC-1 wideband lambda controller
  • Bosch wideband lambda sensor
  • Innovate motorsports DB wideband air/fuel ratio guage 
  • Savage boost gauge
  • 1 DIN guage mounting panel (fits below radio). Also has LC-1 status LED and reset button attached.
  • DVD containing current ECU map / firmware
  • Serial cable and Serial->USB adapter for connecting ECU to computer

Additional things you will need that aren't included to fit this:
  • A length of oil hose to connect the turbo oil drain to the engine. You can either connect this to the factory oil drain inlet (below the inlet manifold) or tap a barb into the sump
  • New o rings for the fuel injectors
  • Some means of boost control, for example a manual boost controller. You can control it off the wastegate but you will get much more stable performance by fitting one of these (<£20). I need the one that was fitted to my MX5 so it's not included.
  • A computer / laptop running ~TunerStudio or MegaTune to tune the car.
  • Silicone vacuum hose to connect things up (e.g. the ECU to the inlet manifold)
  • It would be advisable to make sure your fuel pump is up to the job of supplying the injectors, I would recommend fitting a high output Walbro fuel pump.

This kit will transform a standard NA MX5 into a fire spitting monster, it can be dialled down to a 'daily driver' level or wound up to a race level with minimum fuss. With this stuff fitted to my MX5 it was significantly faster accelerating than my 'drift tuned' Nissan S13 - the light weight of the MX5 means 200bhp feels very, very fast indeed.

Fitting the turbo kit is a weekends job for an amateur and whilst there is a learning curve in tuning the ECU the MiataTurbo.net forum is amazingly helpful and I went from a fuel injector novice to understanding how to tune my car to make it perform really well in a few months.

The kit is located in Northwich, Cheshire and I would prefer collection if possible as the turbo and manifold and quite heavy. However I will happily courier it at your cost.
