I bought just the hull of this boat last summer as I wanted something I could carry on the roof of my car and take for a sail whenever I fancied it.
It didn’t have any of the necessary parts with it so I’ve sourced or fashioned them separately but they all work very well. (Just don’t try to get it certified for topper racing).
The mast is from a windsurfer, as are both of the sails. I use a windsurfer boom and this actually works very well as it means that you don’t have to duck anywhere near as much as you would in a normally rigged topper or similar.
I’ve sailed happily with another adult and with three children at one point and we’ve used it as a paddle boat quite successfully too.
The joy of the current rig is that I just slide it off the roofrack and lay it down near the water then pop the mast in the slot and unfurl the sail. Tie the rope from the bottom of the sail to the boat and attach the boom to the mast and to the sail. Fit the rudder and the dagger board. Tie the main sheet to the end of the boom, pass it through the pulley at the back of the boat and I’m ready to sail. This takes no more than 10 minutes!
Be under no illusions – this is not a looker and it is not a topper that you can enter into any official race.
It is great fun, easy to rig and to sail and it will get you onto the water very cheaply.
The photos show the boat with 2 sails, both of which are included. The larger one works well in lighter winds.
I've uploaded a short video of me sailing it last August. Please have a look at it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFqz1dsoYjQ
Obviously it's collection only - you'll need a van or a roofrack.
