The fourth book of seven now? depicting the colossal planet of Majipoor is set hundreds of years after Pontifex Valentine's troubled comings and goings. In 'Mountains' we read of Ducal disagreements, and there are a lot of Dukes and Princes on Majipoor, one such self-inflicted error leading to a political exile in unmapped frozen territories for a very self-absorbed and hubristic lesser Prince. Silverberg's style changed, unfortunately a turn for the worse. Still there's that relentless barrage of alien names for fruit, meat and veg, still there is evidently a royal 'caste' system not really explained like, say, Dune's was, but the tale careers along at an even pace and of course it's Silverberg so we get a sense of scale to Majipoor, even in a skinny volume like this one.
