NAPOLEON I, Emperor of France.

An important Letter Signed ‘Napol’, indicating a dispatch of importance, on his campaign against the Russians in Poland, few days before the Battle of Eylau, to Marshal Davout (”Mon Cousin”) with orders for Davout’s division, discussing the number of troops at Seurburg, with instructions for spreading a false rumour about the French advance against the Russians, and stating that “the enemy might fight today with the fifty or forty thousand men that he has.” [trans.] In French. 18 lines, 1½ pages, 9½ x 8 inches, in fine condition. With a separate English translation. At Passenheim [East Prussia, now Poland], 3 February 1807, at 6 o’clock in the morning.

A great letter, revealing a new urgency as the day of battle approaches. Napoleon requires Davout to tell him when he is able to reach Passenheim, and confides that he intends to alter the direction of the Morand Division. On 3 February the enemy’s army, unable to retreat, appeared ranged in order of battle. “Bonaparte was himself all day [3 February] with the advanced guard of his army, which suffered very heavy loss - not less than 1500 men, and of which there were many prisoners.” [Robert Wilson, Napoleon’s Campaigns in Poland 1806-7, originally published 1810] The Emperor Napoleon writes during the Polish Campaign to one of his most trusted marshals. Napoleon’s correspondent, Louis-Nicholas Davout (1770-1823), Marshal of France, the victor of Auerstadt, had a genius for military organisation and was one of the outstanding commanders of the period. He became Minister of War and Governor of Paris during the Hundred Days. The Battle of Eylau (7 and 8 February 1807), was a hard fought battle between Napoléon's Grande Armée and the Russians near the town of Eylau in East Prussia. On 31 January 1807 the Emperor arrived at Willenberg from Warsaw. Marshal Davout added to his renown in the campaign of Eylau and Friedland. Napoleon left him as governor-general of the newly-created Duchy of Warsaw following the Treaty of Tilsit of 1807, and the next year created him Duke of Auerstädt.
