In a video game sense Mario makes it look so easy. A lot of video game series grow stale with every new release on newer and newer consoles. Crash Bandicoot; Tony Hawk's Skateboarding; even Sonic The Hedgehog went through some recent rough years stemming back to his 2006 PS3 game of the same name. But that's never been the case with Mario. Every year, every game, the graphics get better and more gaming features are added; yet they manage to maintain high levels of gameplay vibrancy and charm...well, except for a game called Hotel Mario, but I think the numerous YouTube poop videos can explain that far better than I ever could.

But such a perk was not so obvious way back in 1990, and after three stupendous NES outings there may have been some doubt -from gamers and critics alike- as to if Mario could continue to wow and amaze by the time Super Mario World was released in Japan on the Super Famicon (the Japanese SNES), a console that was so young back then it was still wearing nappies. The game was released in the UK on the SNES in 1992. Fortunately SMW turned out to be another video game classic, and one that still holds up very well today.

The story: Mario, Luigi and Princess Toadstool have travelled to Dinosaur Land for a relaxing vacation. Very much needed after what the trio had been through on the NES. But before Mario can massage sun cream onto the Princess' back and Luigi can build sandcastles resembling plumbers' toolboxes, King Bowser once again manages to kidnap the Princess and allows his Koopa kids to wreck havoc on Dinosaur Land. Once again the brothers are forced to initiate Operation: You're-Going-Down-Bowser. Whilst on their travels they stumble across a friendly dinosaur named Yoshi, who explains to them that his friends are trapped in eggs in each of the Koopa castles. So to recap: we're rescuing friendly dinos and a princess. Nothing special then!

SMW consists of over 60 levels; each and every one of them joy to play through. The game's graphical serving is just 2D pixels while its audio beverage has a slight robotic sound to it. Despite this they both capture the atmosphere of the levels in a very nice cartoony manor. For example when you play through the Ghost Houses (the first one being on the Donut Plains) the eerie high pitched notes give you the impression that you really are in the spooky atmosphere of a haunted house, and being surrounded by lots of Boos and a little bit of mist also add to their spookiness. Meanwhile the music in the underwater levels has a slow tempo, which makes it well suited to those levels since you don't tend to move very quickly while swimming. As for that deep blue background? Oh man, doesn't it just make you wanna to go out for a swim?! It does the trick for me, although the chances of me finding any fire flowers underwater in real life are about as remote as a long term sturdy relationship with Katie Price.

It's not just the graphics and music (despite this being a SNES game) that make the levels fun to play. It's the general setup of the levels as well. The pits; the blocks; the moving platforms; the pipes that lead to various goodies and other exciting areas; the various enemies you face and their positioning in the levels...OK, so it's not the most challenging platform game you'll ever play in your life (although there are some levels in the last couple of worlds that are a little tricky), but pretty much everything you're faced with in SMW is bright, breezy and exciting; and the replay value is multiplied thousands of times because of it.

Some of the levels are cleverly designed and require you to get your thinking cap on. The Ghost Houses have numerous doors for Mario and Luigi to enter, leading them and you on a spooky Ring-Around-The-Rosie as you try to find the exits to what the Ghostbusters would see as their idea of diamond mines. Another interesting level takes place on the second level of Chocolate Island. The first segment of the level in question is always the same, but the second segment varies depending on the number of coins in your possession and how much time is left on the clock when you enter the first warp pipe. With only one of these "second" segments taking you to the next level you'll find yourself replaying the level numerous times to see which time/coin combination is the correct one. Reading it here it sounds irritating, but it's actually a lot of fun; and even if you guess the combo correctly at the first time of asking you'll find yourself replaying that level over and over again just to see what the other second segments were. Only Nintendo and Mario could come up with an idea like that and make it fun!...Sorry. Now I'm just licking the plumber's boots.

Like I said earlier there are over 60 levels in this game. We're talking a fair amount of longevity, but the game's lifespan is further extended by a 360 charge (and CLEAR!!) by the fact that a fair number of levels have more than one exit. The first ones are easy to reach, get from start to finish. But the second ones are hidden away and usually require keys to unlock them. The reward for your gaming detective work is special routes on the world map which lead to hidden levels and more platforming goodness. SMW keeps on giving until the last drop of generous giving has been given away. Just when you think you've found all the levels it has to offer, you find one more exit; one more route on the world map; one more level to visit and clean out. Lovely.

There's a few other positives to mention here. SMW marked the debut of Yoshi, the childish looking dinosaur who's good at playing horsie with Mario, and made Mama Luigi famous on the internet. He's got a long tongue, big appetite, and a decent amount of charisma. The classic power-ups returned from the NES games as well, like mushrooms and fire flowers, as well as the feathers from Super Mario Bros. 3, though for this outing the brothers get capes instead of racoon body features. There's also a spinning jump ability which can be used to break certain blocks while on top of them.

Finally there's a large variety of enemies to throw a fireball or spin a cape at. The classics such as Koopa Troopas made a return from the NES series, and there were lots of new ones introduced for the first SNES outing. We have Wigglers, caterpillars with a Jekyll/Hyde personality; Super Koopas, koopas who clearly love their Superman comics; and Chargin' Chucks, enemies with American Football helmets on and have a bad habit of chargin'. If you don't get that last one then you're probably the pet dog of the person who is meant to be reading this review, in which case "Down boy! Down!"

How else can I praise Super Mario World? Well what about giving it full marks? That's exactly what I've done. If you would prefer to play this game on the go then I would recommend picking up a copy of Super Mario Advance 2 for the Game Boy Advance. But personally, sitting on a chair with a brick sized cartridge slotted into a SNES console positioned in front of a big TV? That was good enough for me back in the day, and it still would be now.
