From Else and Paul Hughes, celebrated early pioneers of the studio jewellery movement in Norway, this bronze and stone brooch is so sculptural, with planes soaring in all directions and a snowflake form.
It has a loop on the back so can also be used as a pendant.
Probably made with the lost wax technique for which the Hughes were known, it is extremely 3-D and the surface is hand-finished with distinctive textures, some of which were oxidized (deliberately darkened) for contrast and interest.
Excellent vintage condition.
The brooch has a lovely vintage patina; cleaning and polishing are left to the buyer's discretion.
It is signed on the back "STUDIO E.&P. Of Norway" (Interestingly, even on the back, the surface is textured in different ways.)
Else Berntsen Hughes was born in Oslo in 1938 and died in 2002. Paul Hughes was born in England in 1934 and died in 1981. They met at the Central College of Arts and Crafts in London and they established their workshop near Oslo in 1959. Their international breakthrough came soon after, when they were one of the two most acclaimed jewellery designers from Norway at the 1960 Triennale in Milan. Known for their imaginative forms, they were inspired by the arts and crafts of different cultures and their work was unlike other Scandinavian jewellery, both in its inspiration and use of the lost wax technique, which they had learned in England. They were active in the sixties and seventies, which was the exciting heyday of Scandinavian modern design but their untimely deaths made for a regrettably short period of productivity.
