Odes and Other Poems by Henry Neele

A scarce collection by the young poet Henry Neele.

About the Author
Henry Neele (1798–1828) was an English poet and literary scholar. The son of a cartographer, engraver, and copperplate printer, Samuel John Neele, he began publishing  (anonymously) in the Monthly Magazine in 1814. His first volume, Odes and Other Poems, was published in 1817, at his father's expense, but attracted the  attention of essayist and physician Dr Nathan Drake. A second edition appeared in July 1820, and in March 1823 his Poems, Dramatic and Miscellaneous,  inscribed to the Scottish poet Joanna Baillie was published. This was reviewed extensively in The British Magazine of that year and had considerable success,  which led to him becoming a popular contributor to magazines and annuals for the rest of his short life. He delivered lectures on Shakespeare at the age of twenty  and produced an edition of The Tempest in 1824, as the start of an edition of the complete works of Shakespeare, aborted by its publisher after poor sales.  Neele also gave lectures on the history of English poetry in 1826–7 at the Russell Institution and repeated these at the Western Literary and Scientific Institution  in Whitcomb Street. Like many in that period, he was critical of the Metaphysical Poets. Donne's "beauties of thought and diction," he wrote, "are so overloaded with  far-fetched conceits and quaintnesses... that there is now very little probability of his ever regaining the popularity which he has lost." The lectures were  published posthumously. The collection included the hymn "O Thou! Who sittest enthroned on high." His three-volume Romance of History (1827) is a collection  of tales illustrating English history, popular in their time, but marred, according to Richard Garnett by a "curious dialect that was then considered to represent  medieval English."

Neele was described as "short of stature and of appearance rather humble and unprepossessing, but his large expanse of forehead and the fire of his eye betokened  mind and imagination." After a period of overwork, he is said to have become confused and deranged about nine days before he committed suicide at home in Marylebone  by slitting his own throat on 7 February 1828. He left a widow, Jemima Mary Anne.

Postage & Packaging

I am a bookseller based in the South West of England. I have over ten years experience of operating on eBay, and post items to every corner of the globe, without  exception. Once you have paid for your book it will be despatched to you on the next available posting day.

My aim is to get your book to you promptly and above all safely, without damage. Books are firstly wrapped in strong protective bubble wrap before being mailed  in a bespoke card book mailer, for the majority of books. Large volumes and sets will be mailed in very strong hand cut card  boxes. Being a bibliophile myself I completely understand what a precious item a book is, and I understand therefore how to handle a book carefully and treat it with  the reverence it deserves.

The postage charge I quote always reflects the genuine cost of posting & packaging the book. The heavier the book, the higher the charge. I usually quote prices for  the standard service available, i.e. Second Class / Standard Parcel for the UK, Airmail for the Rest of the World. I can offer other services such as Recorded &  Insured deliveries, and usually do so as a matter of course for books of higher value. Please e-mail me if you have any special postage  requirements and I will do my best to accomodate your needs.

Payment

My preferred method of payment is Paypal, and Paypal is the only method of payment I will accept from buyers who are not  resident in the United Kingdom (i.e. not resident in England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland).

From UK buyers only I will also accept Personal Cheques and Postal Orders. If paying by either of these  methods your package will take a little longer to reach you as it will be despatched only when funds clear.

Returns Policy

I aim to make my listings as clear as possible, with comprehensive condition descriptions and clear photographs. If anything in my condition ratings I will tend to  down rate a book rather than run the risk of being misleading. However I do accept that, on the rare occasion, a customer will not be satisfied for whatever reason and  will want to return a book for a refund. I am happy to accept returns, within the reasonable conditions stated below. I am always happy to communicate with customers  to resolve any problem, so please do not hesitate to contact me for clarification on any point, or to resolve any issue.

  • Returns will be accepted  within 30 days from the day the item is delivered to the customer.

  • The item must be returned in the condition in which it was received, therefore should be adequately packaged.

  • The buyer will bear the cost of the return posting and packing.

  • If the above criteria are met, a full refund will be made of the original cost of the item, but not of the original postage charge.

  • If the item is found to be, upon delivery to the customer, defective, then a full refund including the original postage cost will be offered. The customer will remain responsible for the cost of returning the item.

  • Definitions of the Condition of a Book

Aa a reputable online book seller, I use the Independent Online Bookseller's Association guidelines on how to describe a book's condition. Below is an explanation of  each rating.

MINT (M): Without faults or defects, unread, in the same immaculate condition in which it was published (Note: very few 'new'  books qualify for this grade, as many times there will be rubs/scuffs to the dustjackets from shipping, or bumped lower spine ends/corners from shelving).

FINE (F): Approaches the above, but not crisp. May have been carefully read and dustjacket may have been slightly rubbed or spine ends slightly bumped from  shelving/shipping, but no real defects or faults.

(NOTE: From here on, there may be '+' and '-' in a grade, which will mean that it is above the grade noted but not quite to the next higher grade for '+', and that it  is below the grade noted but not quite to the next lower grade for '-'.

NEAR FINE: A book or dustjacket approaching FINE but with a couple of very minor  defects or faults.

VERY GOOD: A used book showing some small signs of wear on either binding or dustjacket. Any defects/faults must be noted.

GOOD: The average used and worn book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects must be noted.

FAIR: A worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title page, etc. (which must be noted).  Binding, dustjacket, etc. may also be worn. All defects/faults must be noted.

POOR / READING COPY: A book that is sufficiently worn that its only merit is the complete text, which must be legible. Any missing maps or plates should still  be noted. May be soiled, scuffed, stained, or spotted, and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc.

EX-LIBRARY: Will always be designated as such no matter what the condition of the book.

BOOK CLUB: Will always be noted as such no matter what the condition of the book.

BINDING COPY: A book in which the pages or leaves are perfect but the binding is very bad, loose, off, or non-existent.

Always, if issued with one, the lack of a dustjacket or slipcase will be noted.
