ORGANIC GROWING MEDIA FOR CONTAINER GROWN GRAPE VINES.

Grape vines are very easy to grow in containers. It enables them to be grown outdoors in the summer and to be brought into a more sheltered spot, if necessary, in the winter. Our growing media is lighter than garden soil so the containers will be easier to move.

This grape vine compost includes:

1. Cocopeat with natural rooting hormones to help get new plants established quickly. It encourages the first white roots which search for the necessary minerals to provide the energy to develop the secondary root system, which will go on to sustain the plant in years to come.

2. Coco husk chips to retain moisture, air and nutrients around the roots, particularly when heavy demand is made by the plant at fruiting time.

3. Perlite and Horticultural Grit for excellent drainage. Whilst grape vines like to be kept lightly moist, they do not tolerate soggy soil. So good drainage is essential.

4. An organic slow release fertilizer is supplied in a separate bag for top dressing once your plants get established. Just a small amount can also be mixed into the compost at planting time.

5. A separate bag of coco husk chips to use as a drainage layer at the bottom of the container. Usually broken pots or stones are used, but these are heavy and permit growing media to be flushed away through the drainage hole when watering. Some of the coco husk chips should be placed as a drainage layer before you put the growing media in the container, and the rest should be used as a mulch on top of the soil. This will deter slugs and snails as well as weeds. Just be sure that the mulch is not in contact with the stem of your vine.
