About BADA-UK:
Borreliosis and Associated Diseases Awareness UK (BADA-UK) is a registered Lyme disease charity whose aims are to raise awareness of Borreliosis / Lyme disease and the increasing problem of ticks in the United Kingdom.
We teach preventative methods to avoid infection in both humans and animals, and this includes correct tick removal.
All of our staff are unpaid volunteers, most of whom suffer from tick-borne diseases which we acquired in the UK. Tick-borne diseases are preventable.
Knowing how to defend against tick bites and how to remove ticks correctly will help you and your pets to stay safe.
Why do we supply the O’Tom Tick Twister?
As an independent organisation, we are not affiliated with the manufacturers of any tick-removal products. We have reviewed a number of devices that are available in the UK. Through studies, and our own experiences using the product, the O’Tom Tick Twister has proved its efficiency. Until further independent study (not performed or commissioned by tool manufacturers or distributors) has been conducted, we DO NOT recommend any other types of tick remover tools.
The O'Tom is favoured by professionals (veterinary, medical, forestry and field workers etc), as well as by the general public.
In a comparison study of four different tick-removal devices, published in the Veterinary Record (2006, 159, 526 - 529), the O'Tom Tick Twister was compared with surgical forceps, a pen-tweezer device, and a tempered steel tool (slit and traction action). The O'Tom Tick Twister proved to be significantly better than the other devices for the time required to remove the tick, the ease with which the tick was grabbed, the force needed to extract the tick, the reaction of the animal and the condition of the tick's mouth parts.

Why is removing a tick correctly so important?
Compressing the body of the tick can cause its saliva and gut contents to be squeezed out and back into the bloodstream of the host. Infective organisms can be transferred this way.
Using fiddly implements can prolong tick removal and stress the tick. This can cause it to regurgitate its stomach contents along with any infective organisms.
PLEASE DO NOT freeze, burn, or smother the tick with petrolium jelly, alcohol, or other substances, because this will also stress the tick and can cause it to regurgitate.
PLEASE DO NOT scratch off or crush a tick because it can leave bits behind in the skin and spill the saliva and gut contents which can result in infection.
The O'Tom Tick Twister:
- Removes the tick, quickly and without any pain
Tick Remover Instructions:
1. Choose the most suitable O'Tom Tick Twister hook, according to the size of the tick.
2. Engage the hook by approaching the tick from the side (the body of a tick is flat) until it is held securly.
3. Lift the hook very lightly and TURN IT (screwing or unscrewing). The tick detaches by itself after 2 or 3 rotations.
