Words cannot truly express how exquisite these prints are, the photos provided below are taken in dim light and so unfortunately they do the prints no justice, the buyer will not be disappointed though and even if you decide that they are not for you, a full refund will be issued on me receiving the returned prints.

As provenance to how much these usually cost to buy here is a link of various works by and after Henry Alken; http://www.bloomsburyauctions.com/auction/13420/60/2

A superb genuine 19th century set of 4 aquatints etched by Henry Alken and aquatinted by George Hunt (Artist info below).

Each print has clear plate marks and are brilliantly hand coloured.

These are not the smaller prints that are at present flooding the market, these are large wall prints measuring approx 22 1/2" x 17" (540mm x 435mm) unframed. The plates measure 450mm x 355mm.

Published by Thomas Mclean, London and dated 1823.

Subject: Fox hunting scenes entitled 'Check', 'The cover', 'Full cry', 'The Death'.

Henry Alken (1785-1851).

Alken was born on 12 October 1785 in Soho London and baptised on November 6 at St James's Church, Piccadilly. He was the third son of Samuel Alken, a sporting artist. Two of his brothers were George, Samuel Jr (also an artist) and Sefferien John. In 1789, Henry's family moved to 2 Francis Street East, Bedford Square.

Young Henry first studied under his father and then with the miniature painter John Thomas Barber Beaumont (1774–1841), also known as J.T. Barber. In 1801, Alken sent a miniature portrait of Miss Gubbins to the Royal Academy Exhibition. He exhibited a second miniature at the Royal Academy before abandoning miniature painting and taking on painting and illustrating. Early in his career, he painted sporting subjects under the name of "Ben Tally-O". Alken married Maria Gordon on October 14, 1809 at St. Clement’s Parish Church in Ipswich. On August 22 a year later the couple's first son was baptised. Alken went on to father five children, two of whom were artists, Samuel Henry, also a sporting artist and known as Henry Alken junior, and Sefferien junior.

From about 1816 onwards Alken "produced an unending stream of paintings, drawings and engravings of every type of field and other sporting activity," and his soft-ground etchings were often colored by hand. When Alken was 26, he and his young family lived over a shop in Haymarket that belonged to print publisher Thomas McLean of the "Repository of Wit and Humour." Mclean paid Alken a daily wage of 30s, considered a good salary at the time.

Alken died in April 1851 and was buried in Highgate cemetery. Although fairly affluent for most of his career, he fell on hard times towards the end of his life and was buried at his daughter's expense.

George Hunt (publisher/printer; printmaker; British; Male; 1820 - 1845; fl.)

George Hunt was a formidable printmaker and publisher and his works are highly sort after. He was an aquatint specialist who worked for others as well as publishing for himself or in partnership (esp. with Pyall). It is believed he maybe a relation of Charles Hunt (qv).

In fair to good cosmetic condition with some browning and foxing paper commonly has with this age. The paint has some patches of craquelure and bubbling but nothing major. On one of the prints there are little dots of paint loss, moisture damage and a small scratch to the plate. There is marking to the borders and scuffs to some of the edges and corners also but for a better understanding of condition please view the large pictures below by scrolling down this page.

These prints are for sale unmounted and unframed.

All prints will be sent via a fully tracked courier sandwiched between layers of stiff cardboard to prevent damage during transit.

Please see the large pictures below for a better understanding of their condition.  The colour on these prints is still very good and the condition overall is good as you will see below.

There are a lot of pictures below so please be patient while they load and maybe using the tab at the side of the page to scroll down would give better control rather than using the mouse wheel to scroll down.

Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask and i will be as helpful as possible.

Our policies:

Payment is to be made within 7 days after the auction has ended.

Ebay sellers including ourselves have no control regarding delivery times, just dispatch times. We always dispatch our items within 3 days after receiving cleared payment.

In the case of non reciept of or damage to your item we are happy to investigate the matter thoroughly and may ask you to allow up to 36 days for delivery as this is the time required before being able to make a claim with Royal Mail.

In the case of the buyer receiving a damaged item, a return may be accepted and/or a refund may be issued in the appropriate circumstances after receiving photographic evidence of the damaged item.

If a failed attempt is made to deliver the parcel and you fail to collect the parcel from the sorting office it will be sent back to us, we will then require additional payment for the redispatch of the parcel.

36 days is the minimum time period that is accepted by Royal Mail before allowing any claims for insurance in the case of loss or damage.

All of our items are wrapped to an appropriate standard to save them from damage in the post.

For every item listed we try very hard to provide accurate postage costs. Sometimes however we do fail due to unforseen circumstances including additional and non-additional packaging requirements.

Please understand that postage charges don't just cover the service charge, they cover all other hidden costs as well ie:-

* Petrol and parking costs.

* Quality packaging (subject to availability) including: bubble wrap, envelopes, fragile stickers, address and return address labels, ink/pens, boxes, cellotape, parcel tape, fragile and fragile glass tape.

* Time spent wrapping parcels and taking them to the post office (a timely process).

Recycled packaging is also used, which is our part in reducing environmental waste.

Unless another P&P price is quoted, International postage fees are based on the destination it would cost the most to post to as it is not possible to list the rates for every destination.

It is very difficult in most cases to predict the postage charge.

Sometimes we do notice that the postage charged is too much and so we do issue a refund of the difference, however due to the high volume of parcels posted we do also miss this sometimes and so please feel free to contact us if the postage charged is more than 10% greater than what it cost us to post (minimum fee of 50p), and a refund of the difference will be issued. The 10% extra on top of the postage costs is the money that covers the hidden postage fees as mentioned above and is already included in the postage fee charged to the buyer.

If the buyer has 10 feedback or less and he/she doesn't reply to a 'confirmation of purchase' message then we reserve the right to cancel the bid. This is due to the increase of low feedback buyers not paying for their items.

As soon as you have received your item and you are happy with your purchase, we ask kindly if you will leave us positive feedback and in the case you are not happy, to contact us so we can resolve any issue amicably.

We require the buyer to leave feedback first due to the increased number of buyers abusing the feedback system. On a few occasions we have known buyers to leave inappropriate feedback due to them not reading the listing properly and not thoroughly viewing the large pictures provided in the listing. In the case of this happening, appropriate feedback wil be left in return. We have also had a buyer trying to bribe us by asking for a part refund in return for positive feedback, this simply will not be tolerated and any bribery or abuse will be instantly reported to ebay who takes both of these problems very serious.

If you should have any problems with your purchase please feel free to contact me through the ebay messaging system regarding the matter.

If more than one item is purchased from me I will combine postage where possible.

Please feel free to view other items I have for sale.

Thanks for reading and happy shopping.
