Got a used example which had been looked after. Solid metal body and good controls. Very compact, smaller than I expected. Records stereo voice, lectures, seminars or live music in good quailty using mp3 or wav formats. Has a mic zoom function to focus on a speaker quite a distance away, but I haven't used this option. Can also be used as a podcast or mp3 player. Built in speakers also very good for their size (stereo) although understandably not loud. Note that isn't a true dictation machine as you can't insert or append to a recording, just record notes in one go, but that doesn't concern me. Batteries last well and don't seem to drain much when not in use, which has been a problem with other Olympus recorders I have used.

I'm a big fan of Olympus's DM-450 and 550 digital voice recorders, and of Olympus's excellent "Sonority" software The recorders are very robust - unlike some competitors they have an alloy chassis which provides significant protection to the electronics. I've had a DM-450 from new about 8 years ago, and it's been around Europe in my pocket, been dropped, thrown (by a police officer) and generally benignly abused, and still works perfectly. I bought a "spare" (the above purchase) on the basis of redundancy - I always carry two cameras, for example, in case one malfunctions - and both recorders are serving their purpose - recording interviews, general conversation and "wild" ambient sound - admirably.

I bought this to replace a previous one which had mysteriously disappeared. I bought the same one because I'd got used to it though I can't say I ever entirely mastered its many functions. However, it served my purpose which is to record interviews. It does this reliably and clearly seeming to cope well with background noise and the built in microphone is excellent. The machine is small, neat and feels reassuringly solid and well crafted.
I bought this device to use as a dictaphone. Cheap and ideal if you use windows, rather than a linux system. A pause when starting the recording is required, as the sound doesn't transfer immediately for some reason. Otherwise the recording device is sensitive and you have to be clear and loud if there is alot of background noise.
