Original Antique Bird Chromolithograph CALIFORNIA CONDOR TURKEY VULTURE BUZZARD

Genuine original antique folio-sized chromolithograph of three large North American scavenger birds, printed more than 100 years ago.

This handsome illustration measures 15" x 11-1/2" overall, and the birds shown were drawn from nature by Theodore Jasper, a medical doctor who had made a lifetime study of ornithology.

The birds depicted are the California condor, Cathartes californianus, perched atop a tree trunk, the black vulture, Cathartes atratus, and the turkey buzzard, Cathartes aura.

The turkey buzzard has one claw on the severed leg of a small hoofed animal, as you may see in the detail below:

This chromolithograph was published in The Birds of North America, by Jacob H. Studer, under the auspices of the Natural Science Association of America, and copyrighted 1888.

Studer's ornithology was one of the most popular bird books of the late 19th century in North America, and several editions of this work appeared under varying titles. This illustration is from the 1903 New York edition, and is identified as Plate CXI.

Condition: It is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.

This is an original, authentic antique chromolithograph, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It would look wonderful matted and framed, and it would make a beautiful display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift. We'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference.
