The table and six chairs i am selling originate from a building designed by Norman Foster, which opened in 1983, called the Renault Distribution Centre, located in Swindon. This building was the UK's first "High-Tech' building of any note and it is truly iconic for its totally unique structure of yellow cable-tensioned structure. Foster was given the freedom to also design the furniture for the Renault Distribution Centre's workers and as a consequence he designed the tables for both the sales department and a different design for the canteen. The table and chairs i am auctioning came from the canteen and they are rare for the fact that they were essentially handmade specifically for that space and use. From records it seems that only about 40 pieces were ever made for the building. Following the design of these tables, Foster took this design forward and developed the more commonly known 'Nomos' table, which has become iconic in its own rights. What is clear is that the table i am selling is the pre-cursor to the Nomos. It is essentially a prototype for the mass produced version. The table design is based on the NASA Lunar Module Landing Ship which Armstrong jumped out of for the first time onto the moon's surface. The point being that the high-techness of this design reflected the spirit of the very unique building in which it was to be used. The association is very clear when you look at the detailing of the table, which comes in its very original state, with its worn neoprene rubber suckers for the glass table top and battered grey painted frame where the original Eames DSR chairs have been bashed against it, during the eating of Renault Distribution Centre bacon and eggs (presumably). The Eames chairs are of the 1982 period and were built by Herman Miller Factory. Each chair, which are of GRP have the HM sticker and imprint in the surface. I personally picked up the table and chairs from the building, which as an architect was a truly amazing experience and i have photographs of me and the goods within the building should anyone need the provenance. I am sorry to see the them go as they are a piece of British design history. i hope whoever wins the auction that they enjoy these amazing artefacts as much as i have. Finally, please realise that they are now 31 years old and in their totally original condition.
