This listing is for a 2.5 litre tin of Osmo 410 UV Protection Oil satin matt clear finish for exterior use. This version is similar to the 420 product except without the active biocides. The item will be sent out by express delivery and an accompanying product information leaflet. Please click on the name to see our listing for Osmo 420 UV Protection Oil Extra or its sister product Osmo 425 Oak UV Protection Oil Extra.
Osmo 410 UV-Protection-Oil is a satin-matt, clear finish for exterior. It is based on natural oils, is microporous, and does not crack, flake, peel or blister. When used as a final finish after staining wood, Osmo UV-Protection-Oil prolongs the renovation time significantly. As a stand alone finish, with two coats, it prolongs the greying process on vertical surfaces by UV-Protection factor 12 in comparison to untreated wood. Easy to renew, no sanding or primer necessary. Easy to apply and will not dry during application.
Osmo 410 UV-Protection-Oil is based on natural vegetable oils. Natural oils penetrate deeply into the wood, keeping it elastic and healthy, and preventing it from drying and becoming brittle. The wood is allowed to breathe. Moisture can evaporate. Shrinking and swelling are reduced.
Health and environment:
The principle of Osmo to manufacture and supply only products which are safe and environmentally friendly during production as well as for application resulted in the successful certification according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 (quality management) and DIN EN ISO 14001 (environmental management).
For all vertical exterior woods (dimensionally and non-dimensionally stable): doors, windows and windowsills, carports, timber cladding, balcony, screens & fences, pergolas, garden houses and furniture. It is also suitable for bamboo.
Number of coats required
1 coat = final finish (when overcoating Natural Oil Wood Stain or similar)
2 coats = complete finish
1 l = approx. 24 m² (1 coat smooth wood)
1 l = approx. 12 m² ( 2 coats smooth wood)
Stripped and rough sawn wood need more material because of their surface structure.
Wood surface must be clean, dry and frost-free (maximum moisture content 20%). Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is ready to use, please do no thin, stir well before use.Clean old open-porous finishes thoroughly. Remove old varnishes. Please do not sand even
surfaces finer than P120. We recommend to apply a first coat with a pigmented oil such as OneCoat Only, Natural Oil Wood Stain or Country Colour. If additional protection against blue stain, rot and mildew is required for outdoors pre-treat (if possible from all sides) with Osmo Base Coat WR*.
Methods of application:
Apply thinly and evenly along the wood grain with either a Natural Bristle Brush or the Osmo Microfibre Roller, and spread well. Allow for good ventilation whilst drying. Apply a second coat as before. When applying on an already pigmented surface or when renovating 1 coat of the UV-Protection-Oil is enough. Make sure that the surface has been cleaned upfront. The finish is – among other things – influenced by the wood’s natural characteristics, therefore a trial application is required before finishing.
In general the use of galvanised, non-oxidising nails and fasteners is recommended.
Cleaning of tools:
With Osmo Brush Cleaner (benzene-free), Code: BCTC1.
Approx. 12 hours (normal climatic conditions, 23°C/50%, normal humidity). Lower temperatures and/or high humidity can increase the drying time. Do NOT apply at temperatures below 5°C.
Depending on the level of weathering apply 1 coat of Osmo UV-Protection-Oil after approx. 3-4 years on the cleaned and intact finish. In general, one has to take a shorter renovation time into account when surfaces are exposed to extreme weathering, and surfaces where water cannot drain (horizontal surfaces) such as deckings, post caps, windowsills and garden chairs (furniture). If, however, the greying process has already begun revive the surface with the Osmo Wood Reviver and re-apply 2 coats of the Osmo UV-Protection-Oil.
Nb. Depending on the level of weathering apply 1 coat of Osmo UV-Protection-Oil after approx. 3-4 years on the cleaned and intact finish. In general, one has to take a shorter renovation time into account when: 1. surfaces are exposed to extreme weathering, 2. using exotic wood species,3.surfaces where water cannot drain (horizontal surfaces) such as deckings, post caps, garden chairs (furniture) and windowsills.
Nb. The UV-Protection-Oil is unsuitable as a stand alone finish for deckings. There should be a minimum 15 degree angle on architectural joinery on the horizontal. Sharp edges have to be rounded (corner radius > 2 mm).
If the greying process has already begun revive the surface with the Osmo Wood Reviver and reapply 2 coats of the Osmo UV-Protection-Oil. In order to achieve UV factor 12, it is very important to apply the UV-Protection-Oil twice. When only 1 coat has been applied on an untreated wood, the durability will be reduced significantly.
Owing to the high oil content the clear UV-Protection-Oil shows a light yellowing effect when used as a final finish on white stained surfaces. Therefore, we recommend using the Natural Oil Woodstain 900 white as a final finish for already white stained surfaces. Oil enhances the natural tone of wood (wet look).
Damage caused during installation (fixing holes/cut edges) and other surface damages e.g. cracks should be treated immediately with two coats. These areas will grey quickly if left untreated.
Shelf -life is 5 years or more if can is tightly closed. If thickened by frost, it will regain its consistency under normal temperatures within 26 – 36 hours.
