WHAT WE DO WHEN REBUILDING PORSCHE BOXSTER ENGINES
These Porsche Boxster engine rebuilds include new piston rings, crank/big end bearings, new hydraulics for both heads, new gaskets & seals.
The engine is stripped to bare components and put into a high pressure cylindrical wash at high temperature with cleansing chemicals,
this removes all carbon deposits and debris from previous failures. From this stage the Cylinder bores are checked for cracks etc.
Some may need resleeving this would be at an extra cost.
The Pistons and or Rings are then changed, Connecting Rods are then checked & re-honed & the Crankshaft is then checked.
After this the main and big end bearing shells are replaced, the Oil pump reconditioned and scavenger pumps checked
Cylinder Heads are stripped down and checked for wear, cracks and for trueness then pressure tested and the face machined.
Valve guides are then checked for wear and replaced as necessary After this valve seats are machined and valve guides are then checked for wear and replaced as necessary.
New/Refaced valves are re cut & the head then leak tested. From there we reface the valves and followers as necessary.
The Camshafts are then checked for wear and replaced as necessary. IMS (intermediate shaft bearing) is checked for any play.
The engine is then reassembled with new gaskets and seals etc.

This is the most common failure for the Porsche Boxster 986, 987 & porsche 911engines.
IMS (intermediate shaft bearing) Failure click here for more information
What usually happens is the intermediate shaft bearing fails. This causes the teeth on the intermediate shaft, (which runs the timing chain to both camshafts on the head) to move, causing the chain to slacken and put the timing out. This in turn usually bends the valves in the head and can damage the pistons or even the cylinder head when the valves snap. Without regular recommended oil and filter changes, the oil can break down and cause the intermediate shaft bearing to fail.
The solution for longer life is more frequent oil changes using the correct Porsche recommended oil.
We always change the air/oil seperator when refitting one of our rebuilt engines.

Other Porsche Boxster Engine Problems.
Rear Main Seal & Piston bores coming apart
Engine oil leaks can occur at the rear main seal and/or intermediate support cover O-ring; a revised seal is available. A careful diagnosis with proper tools is necessary to verify dimensional accuracy of the crankshaft to engine block.
- Valve cover leaks are common.
- Cam tensioner/cam timing issues can cause the engine light to illuminate.
- Smoke, oil consumption, and fuel trim issues with various fault codes can be traced to an internal leak at the oil separator.
- Pay attention to engine noises and the intermediate shaft area; engine failure is possible.
- Persistent coolant loss can be caused by a small leak at the coolant reservoir; the leak may not be visible due to the trunk carpet at the reservoir.
- To ensure engine longevity, coolant loss and overheating issues need to be resolved. Coolant loss—sometimes slow and accompanied by white smoke—is often a sign of internal engine problems. The proper coolant fill procedure must be followed.
- Over time, the engine carrier or the rubber portion of the front engine mount yoke can fail.
