At last a full repair kit for the Philips 4308 / 7 reel to reel tape recorders including belts, brakes and clutches.
I have developed a complete kit of parts and fully illustrated, step by step instructions to repair these popular recorders.
The most common problem is that all of the drive belts and other rubber parts turn to goo and need to be replaced.
The kit includes new belts and other replacement parts and a 27 page, bound, A4 Instruction manual with step by step instructions.
Replacing the belts alone will not work as there is an important rubber clutch mechanism.
The picture below shows a clutch in need of repair. 95% of un-repaired recorders are like this and without being repaired are useless.
Replacing the belts alone is a complete waste of time (and money). The machine will not run correctly.
The Kit covers the 4307 and 4308 recorders but can also be used with others in the series such as the EL Series EL3552, EL3552A, EL3572, EL3553, EL3558, EL3573, EL3554, EL3574, EL3578 and 430x series including N4302, N4303, N4304, N4305, N4306, N4307 and N4308. It is also suitable for the clones of the same machines like the Pye 9123 and the Stella ST9123A and ST461
There are also rubber components in the braking system and mounts that support the recorder that will need replacing.
The good news is that the kit contains everything you will need to get you machine working correctly again.
The Kit covers the 4307 and 4308 recorders but can also be used with others in the 430x series such as the 4302 and 4305.
5 belts are included to cover all of the versions The instructions cover all of the differences between the different versions.
The manual covers all aspects from dismantling and replacement through to cleaning and lubrication.
It is full of hints and tips, ideas, diagrams and photos. It contains all the information you will need and explains the best way to go about it.
Importantly, it contains vital details such as how to dismantle the machine correctly without damaging anything and which screws not to remove to prevent irreparable damage.
You will need a few tools such as screwdrivers, pliers etc. You will also need a small sharp knife. A scalpel or craft knife with a pointed blade is ideal. A common or garden Stanley knife blade is a bit too big. Scalpels with 10A blades are available for a few £s here on eBay.
None of the tasks requires specialist skills, Common sense and very basic electrical / mechanical knowledge are required. If you can’t put a 13A plug on and don’t have pair of pliers then this is probably not for you. I can repair machines to order as required.
Do they work? Users have commented:
