Skye, the Small Isles, and the Long Island were left to the King of Man by the great warrior Chief Somerled, in the partition which he enforced after his naval victory in 1156. This book gives a comprehensive portrait of these islands, dealing not only with their scenic beauty and tourist attractions, but with their geological evolution, their importance for Scottish archaeology and history, and above all the distinctive character and mode of life, past and present, of the inhabitants. Scotland owes much more than she has often been willing to admit to this mixed breed of Celt and Norseman, today the most vitally surviving repository of the Gaelic cultural heritage. The Islanders are shown alike in their strength and weakness; and the book is inspired by an optimism about their future which the author believes is justified by the tenacity with which they have survived, and by which they have preserved their distinctive way of life, amid a changing and sometimes unsympathetic environment.
