Bluebelle is a Privateer 20 Bermudan cutter which has been well cared for over the years and much improved by previous owners. We bought her three years ago after many years sailing a Drascombe Lugger - we decided we wanted a cabin and had plans to cruise the South Cornwall coast and estuaries. In fact we never quite found the time, and last year although we had some great days sailing, we never slept in her once - so we've gone back to open boats and bought another Drascombe - and Bluebelle is for sale.

Designed by Norman Howard in the early '70s as a "Safe, comfortable and easily-trailable family cruiser" she was built by Small Craft in Blockley, better known for their ever popular Shipmate series of micro-cruisers, from the mid '70s to the mid '80s. With the keel up, Bluebelle draws only 14" making her perfect for exploring estuaries and shallow coasts. The outboard (not included) sits in a well behind the cockpit and is protected by the deep skeg aft so no worries about the prop hitting the bottom (there is also an outboard bracket for an auxiliary). Shallow draft makes launching and recovering much easier than most boats of this size, and a weight of 570kg means it can been towed by almost any car.

The two headsails are almost new and still crisp with no damage or fading. They are both fitted with furlers with lines led back to the cockpit. There are two mainsails, one excellent and one old and a bit tired, but useable (the one pictured is the old one). There is also a large Yankee jib which is in very good condition. Standing and running rigging has all been renewed over the last ten years or so.

The self-draining cockpit is deep and secure, and the cabin has four full-length berths and is surprisingly roomy with good sitting headroom. Previous owners have added full professionally fitted electrics with navigation and cabin lighting, illuminated compass, depth-sounder/log (not tested) and vhf radio (not tested). The battery is nearly new and is charged by a small solar charger. Cabin cushions were re-covered in green vinyl by the previous owners, and various fitments and improvements have made the originally very bare interior much more inviting.

There is a custom made spray hood (cost £575 in 2002) which has hardly been used and is as new. Also an anchor with chain and warp, various fenders, a full canvas cover which has a couple of small tears right at one end, but is otherwise good, and an over-boom cover/tent in cream canvas which is in very good condition. Bluebelle has been antifouled and is ready for the season.

She was last surveyed in 2002 and given a good report with no problems - a copy of this survey is included with the original brochure and other paperwork.

The trailer pictured is included and is rust-free with all new rollers, bearings etc - but please note this trailer is NOT roadworthy as the cross-beam is bent. With a new cross beam it would be fine for winter storage and occasional short journeys, but for regular towing/launching a better trailer would be needed.

There has been a lot of interest in these boats in the last few years, as a much more affordable alternative to more recent 'character' boats like the Cornish Shrimper, and there is a friendly and informative owners group on Yahoo Groups - look for Privateer 20.

Please feel free to email me with any questions - or give me a ring on 07837 397046. For  some reason the 'large photo' option is not available on classified listings - but I have many hi-res pictures of the boat including close-ups that I can email if you would like a better look. Or of course viewings are welcomed. Cheers - Chris

I am open to serious offers - but please don't make daft offers as they will be automatically rejected. Please also note that if you don't want the trailer I would of course knock something off the price.
