~ Prussian Model 1842 Crimean War Officers Helmet ~

In 1842, the King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm IV introduced the spiked helmet for the majority of foot troops by A Royal Cabinet Order of 23 October 1842.

The helmet is decorated with a 14 cm tall spike on a cruciform spike base secured with four star shaped fitting. The spike has two ventilation holes and is surrounded by a decorative ring of brass 'pearls' at the lower end.

Inside is a German label which is almost unreadable now, please see the image.

The helmet bears, on the eagle shaped badge, the inscription 'MIT GOTT FUR KOENIG UND VATERLAND' and  "FWR" (Friedrich Wilhelm Rex) cypher inscription, meaning it's a Grenadier Regiment.

It has a convex brass chinscales which is secured to the helmet with a 3cm threaded bolt with a brass head.  Behind the chinscales is a small leather strap meant to keep the two parts together when not worn under the chin. There is a single leather cockade is the national colours to the right.

The Wappen (front plate) is secured by two bolts that passed through the front of the plate.

On the rear of the helmet is a brass spine secured with two brass studs.

It has a green leather lining to the front visor underside.

The original liner is present.

This helmet was part of the German collection sold in Oxford in 2006

~ Dimensions ~

The height of the helmet is 35.6 cm (14 inches). It is 30 cm (11.8 inches) long and 23 cm (9.1 inches) wide.

The helmet weight is 910 grams.

~ Condition ~

The helmet is in good condition.  It retains a good shape, the stitching is complete, the skull has some crazing. The leather liner is in good order.
