This auction is for a superb example of these remarkable speakers. Their reputation as probably the best speaker in the world was restated in February's HiFi World by the editor in a special piece on these speakers. He said that the original was good but when modified by One Thing Audio they are the most revealing and best speakers in the world.
The modifications make all the difference. These speakers have OTEC T treble panels; replaced bass panels; brand new EHT boards; brand new heavy duty clamp boards (which mean that a very large amp can drive them hard without fear of damage) and upgraded bass line drive resistors which increases bass performance significantly. They have been matched for sensitivity and performance. They are structurally sound and their frames and construction are as good if not better than the day they were built.
They have been professionally fitted with an acoustically invisible black cover which gives them a superb contemporary finish and look and the wooden sides have been re-lacquered to a pleasing gloss finish. Underneath the black cover is the original gold metal grille, these look nice but a bit too vintage for some tastes. All the improvements have been completed in 2013, these are effectively as good as brand new Quad ESL57 (if they existed at all).
They stand on OTA Rupert stands, which cost £215 new. They also come with OTA widgets, these cost £85 new. The widgets are designed to allow the speakers to be driven by transistor amps of any size without risk, without them transistor amps may be liable to damage. Don't buy ESL's without widgets if you do not have valves or a Quad amplifier, both of which can manage the demands of these speakers.
The upgrades have been carried out by both One Thing Audio and Aquadthing Audio where the technician (Andy Jones) is actually a relation of the chap that runs OTA, they collaborate closely and the components used are supplied by OTA. The receipt for the work conducted this year is shown in the listing. When I collected them in February he had them on the end of two monoblock Quad 606 power amps and they sounded unbelievable, they love to be driven hard and produce a surprisingly large amount of bass with good amplification.
Included in the auction are the speakers, the widgets, the stands, two speaker power leads terminated in normal three pin household plugs. All you need is speaker cable (about which Peter Walker, of Quad maintained that you don't need expensive cables).
Demonstration is welcome, with a CD and vinyl system, based around a Quad 33 / 303, in BD22 8HP.
Given their size, collection may be preferred by the buyer. They will fit in a Focus easily and are quite robust for transportation purposes. However, I travel around England a lot and would be willing to courier them to most places for an agreed fixed price to cover my fuel costs.
Reason for sale is that the attic music room in which we use the HiFi is being turned into a bedroom and there is not room for everything, I am going back to just using headphones for music listening as the alternatives are unthinkable, big stupid boxes and a grumpy partner, no thanks!
Note: To just service speakers to this spec costs £690.00 at Classique Sounds in Leicester. OTA will charge you £1250 for a full rebuild. This does not include stands, widgets or new cloth (an additional £380 worth of extras).
With regards the offer button, it needs to be very close to the asking price and I will take a bit less if you plan to come and collect, if I have to deliver or wait in all day for a courier then that's the price I need and won't take an offer
