Type Paper Ephemera

Reciept, 1931, from P P Rowe, Mandalay. Receipt has Indian Revenue Stamp.

Rowe and Company's departmental store used to be in the building on Mahabandoola Street, next to the City Hall. Much in the same style as the Secretariat, it was built in 1910 and fast became a prestige place to shop until it was nationalised by the Socialist Government, which took over power in 1962.

This is one of a number of items I am selling relating to a Mr Robert Lionel Phillips, Captain then Major in the 2/20th Burma Rifles. His time in Burma included the period of the Saya San Rebellion 1930-1932

Feb. 17, 2001. Information was written by his son Ioan Phillips:

He was at boarding school at "Christ College, Brecon" where he got his 1st XV Rugby colours and was Head Prefect.
Whilst waiting to go to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he joined the Artists Rifles (London Regiment) and was enjoying it so much that he was
reluctant to go to Sandhurst as a "Gentleman Cadet"!!

After Sandhurst he was commissioned into the Indian Army and joined the Mahratta Light Infantry and served with them in Palestine near the end of

He applied for transfer to the Burma Rifles when it was formed at the end of WW1 thinking it would be a good career move to join it at the start, but
this was not so!! The Burma Rifles was part of the Indian Army but the rest of the Indian Army tended to look down on this newfangled regiment in Burma.
Originally the Burma Rifles was formed for service only in Burma and Malaya but about 1929 the battalion, 2/20 Burma Rifles, my father was serving in was sent to Lansdowne in India about 6000ft in the foothills of the Himalayas to the west of Nepal. The reason for this move was to replace a battalion of the Royal Garhwal Rifles which had to be moved out because of a mutiny or a threat of one. Robert (Robin) Lionel Phillips retired as a major in 1935.
When war broke out he was recalled to active service and returned to India. He became ill and was invalided home to UK, then on his way back to India
his ship was torpedoed and he lost all his kit. The ship was from the P & O (stands for the Pacific & Orient Shipping Line).
He was not recalled again after that.
