The Royston War Mermorial, by Douglas Plowman

Booklet published by the Royston and District Local History Society in 2006, 54 pages. Spiral bound A5 size booklet (N4869OS)

This booklet provides a description of the military service of each soldier appearing on the Royston War Memorial, and thus offers a fascinating insight into the lives and wartime exploits of the men from the Hertfordshire town who fought in the First and Second World Wars.

From the introduction: The Royston War Memorial has stood in melbourn Street for over 80 years. With the passing of time the details of the people who are recorded on such monuments are often forgotten until, in some cases, all that remains is a name.

The purpose of this booklet is to try, in a small way, to halt this process in Royston by gathering together military details of the 141 people named in the memorial and to try and explain their connections with the town. An example of one such entry is goven below to provide an idea of what is included:

  • Goodman, Geoffrey Thomas. Lietenant, Royal Field Artillery. He was the only son of Mr Thomas and Mrs Edith M Goodman, of The Plantation, Royston, who owned a grocery store in the High Street. He was a member of the University of Leeds Officer Training Corps, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in August 1914, promoted to Lieutenant in August 1915 and went out to France in October 1915. He doied on June 1st 1917 aged 23. At about 5:15am a shell burst buried him and some others. He died of wounds to his head and body and is buried in the La Clytte Military Cemetery in Belgium.

The condition of the booklet is generally very good. The cover is clean and bright, with only one or two very minor scuffs, the spiral binding is tight and intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is a small price sticker on the rear side cover.

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
