RP of Brazell Stores in Shabbington village, nr Aylesbury, Buckinhamshire. HP18. c1910

This is a delightful period view of Brazell General Stores in Shabbington, established by Laban Brazell and his wife Elizabeth in the 1870s. Laban was also a builder by trade. The stores stood overlooking the crossroads in the middle of Shabbinton, at the start of what is now Ickford Road. The building is much changed today, and the large shop window has been bricked up and reduced in size and the arched doorway is now just another window – without any visible arch.

The quality of this photograph is exceptional, as you can see from the enlargements below, and it is possible to scan this at high resolution and reveal much of the detail, opening up a virtual window on the shop as it was over 100 years ago. This extends even to being able to determine some of the goods displayed in the shop window.

Brazell General Stores in Shabbington

I am intrigued by the old man peeping over the fence (below), watching the novelty of a photograph being taken. I assume the stout lady standing proudly outside the shop (above) in her white apron is the proprietor’s wife, Elizabeth Brazell.

Brazell General Stores in Shabbington

Shabbington is a relatively small village in the Aylesbury Vale district of Buckinghamshire, about 3 miles west of Thame and 7 miles from Aylesbury. On one side the River Thame creates a natural parish boundary for Shabbinton , and also doubles as the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and neighbouring Oxfordshire.

Shabbington is famous today for the annual steam rally, held in early August. Hundreds of old traction engines, steam ploughs and other veteran vehicles converge on the village from all sides to be admired by thousands of enthusiasts. The village pub, The Old Fisherman, probably does very well!

Condition & Size

This card is in very good overall condition. There is a slight crease in the sky above the right-hand end gable, and another amid the ivy at the other end of the house, but neither detracts significantly from what is a fascinating card. The word “Shabbington” has been added in ink to the bottom right-hand corner, and I would assume this was done contemporary with the production or sending of the card.

The card is addressed to Mrs Walker – I assume the same Mrs Walker as received the other Shabbington cards I’m offering this week. It is also written by “Fanny”. However, it does not appear to have been posted, so was probably delivered by hand, the mile or so to Worminghall. Aside from the general chat, there is an intriguing note referring to “that gentleman with the motor was Mr Bond, looking round all Mr F property something to do with his affair = I have heard he is very ill and not likely to recover how sad =”

The card is standard size at 3½” x 5½” (89mm x 140 mm).
